Meyer Family Gospel Band to perform Saturday
Guest minister in Arcadia Christian Church on February 21 was former Pastor Bob Cable from Nevada, Mo. His Mother, Willa Cable, Redfield, led the singing. His Father, Charles Cable, also former pastor, is recovering from recent surgery. Best wishes to him.
Birthday offerings were given by Allyson Dugan whose birthday was that Sunday, also her brothers, Kadin and Karter Dugan and Delton Watt, Jr. enjoyed the birthday song. Bob was also at the piano at the openinng exercise. It was announced that the Meyer Family Gospel Band of Sheldon, Mo., will return to this church at 7 p.m. Saturday evening. Refreshments will be served. Free-will offering will be taken for the band.
Guests this past weekend in the home of Forrest and Ernestine Berkey were her sister, Ruby Van Dusen from Liberty, Mo., and son, Jim Ward from Kansas City, Mo.. On Saturday evening, Scott Ball, Ray Fairbanks and Joyce Stephens visited in the Berky home and took a home baked raisin pie to Ruby. On Sunday, the Berkeys took Ruby and Jim to Gebhardt's where they met Angela Redd and daughter Bethany for dinner. Their waitress was the other daughter, Kristen Redd.
Our sympathy to Lucille Wirt Johnson, Liberal, Mo., at the time of the death of her daughter, Carolyn Sue Cliffman, 67 of Sheldon, Mo., She died Friday following a short illness.
From Nell Dikeman's 50 years ago news items in the Fort Scott Tribune: In 1960, Karen Covey reigned Queen over the Rainbow Sweetheart Dance. Her escort was her Arcadia boyfriend who were later married. Arcadia friends well remember Mr. and Mrs. Ron Billiard and often greet them on Fort Scott streets or in their insurance office in Fort Scott.
Arcadia friends extend sympathy to the relatives of friends who used to live in Arcadia have died recently. They are Mary Lou Mapes, wife of Harold Mapes, daughter is Debbie Barone of Arma. The other is Earl (Tinker) Totman whose wife is Donna Bean Totman of Osage City. His sister, also living in Osage is Inez Bowin Dugger. Totman's deceased parents are Lester and Beulah (Moss) Totman and birth Mother Eleanor (Scratcher). Also deceased are his brother Mirrel Totman and sister Louella Hines.
When Charles Wonderott came to Arcadia from Mercy Hospital, Fort Scott to take a patient to the doctor's office, he met a friend he had not seen for 30 years, Helen Sisney. She and her late husband, Dale Sisney, were long-time patrons of Prudential Insurance when Charlie was an agent in the Arcadia territory.
On the noon newscats on February 16, KOAM TV honored Paul Shead, Arcadia, as a Four State Hero.
JOY Sunday School class met on Monday evening with eight present for a fine dinner. Wayne Parrish delivered a carry-out to Carole Garrison who celebrated her birthday that day but was unable to attend. President Patty Peterson opened the meeting with the question, What is the meaning of the name Abraham? The answer is Father. After serious business, Vera read humorous short stories. Following this meeting, the Church Board held it monthly meeting chaired by Wayne Parrish. The next meeting of both wil be March 17 in Christian Church bungalow. There will be a Ladies Retreat the last Saturday on March 27. Continental breakfast wil be served at 8:30 a.m. and lunch at noon.
