Nuzum

It won't be a typical evening at work on Friday for Fort Scott Tribune employee Scott Nuzum.

Nuzum, a long-time sports editor and current interim managing editor for the Tribune, will receive the Kansas State High School Activities Association's 2010 Oscar Stauffer Sportswriter Award for his coverage of interscholastic sports during an awards ceremony scheduled to take place following the Fort Scott High School Tigers girls basketball game against Iola High School. The girls game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Friday.

Nominations for the Oscar Stauffer Award were made by high schools across Kansas with the final selection being made by an executive committee of the Kansas Coaches Association. Nuzum was nominated by FSHS Athletic Director Larry Fink.

According to KSHSAA spokesman Brent Unruh, the sportswriter award recognizes excellence in the field of sports writing and acknowledges meritorious service through coverage of interscholastic sports programs in Kansas.

Nuzum, sports editor at the Tribune since 1996 with the exception of a 13-month period in 2002-03, has won other awards for his work in the newspaper. He received third place for sports page layout and design in the daily division 1 category of the 2008 Kansas Press Association Awards of Excellence contest. Judges of that contest said Nuzum's creative use of upcoming event graphics, photographic layout and use of statistics within his stories set his work apart from many others.

Other special recognition activities are also set to take place Friday evening between the basketball games. During the annual Senior Night event, FSHS senior basketball team members will be honored for their contributions to their teams. The seniors' parents will also be recognized during the event.

FSHS senior forward Jolee Sharp will officially be acknowledged during the awards ceremony as the FSHS girls basketball program's all-time leading scorer, and as the first member of the FSHS girls basketball team to score 1,000 points in the history of the program.
