Tiger wrestlers split Pittsburg triangular

PITTSBURG -- Fort Scott High School's wrestling team defeated Iola but lost to Pittsburg at a Southeast Kansas League make-up triangular here Tuesday night.

The Tigers defeated Iola 48-15 and lost to Pittsburg 54-9. In the other dual, Pittsburg beat Iola 66-10.

Only two Tigers won both their matches. Justin Sharp (28-6 at 125 pounds) pinned Iola's Zeph Larney and won a 4-3 decision over Pittsburg's Austin Haake. Dane Cummings (18-13 at 171) pinned Iola's Drew Shepard and Pittsburg's Britton Carter.

Drew Bryant (20-17) became the fourth Tiger to win 20 matches this season when he pinned Iola's Chris Lynn in his 285-pound match. He lost by pin to Pittsburg's Beau Bennett.

Thursday night's league triangular at Chanute will decide the league championship. Fort Scott (4-2 SEK, 10-6 overall) could still win a share if it beats both Chanute and Columbus and Pittsburg loses in one of its duals at Labette County.

Chanute is 6-0 in league and 14-3 overall. Pittsburg (5-1 overall) and Columbus (7-3) overal are tied for second with 5-1 records. Chanute will clinch no worse than a share of the championship by splitting and will win it outright with a sweep.

Action in Chanute begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday night.
