Milo woman wins $10,000 in 'Holiday Cash'
Lula Marshall has been a little down on her luck in 2009, but things are looking up. The 44-year-old Milo woman lost her job several months ago, but she decided to return to school to finish her degree in environmental science. All the while, she stuck to her routine of buying two Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets each week. Her persistence paid off on Dec. 21, when she uncovered a $10,000 prize.
"Every week, when I come into town on Tuesdays, I pay bills, get groceries and I go home," Marshall began. "And I buy two tickets each time."
Marshall purchased two "Holiday Cash" Scratchers tickets at Tobacco Shack, 2505 E. Austin Road, in Nevada. While scratching the tickets in her Jeep, she discovered both tickets were winners.
"The first one was a $2 winner," recalled Marshall. "The second one, I believe the winning numbers were 12 and two, and I got all the way down to the second-from-the-last number and it was a two. I thought, 'Well, it's probably a free ticket, or $2 or something.' I scratched it off, and it said $10,000. (There was) a little bit of screaming, a little bit of crying. I think the clerks inside the store thought I was crazy."
Behind on her car loan payments, Marshall was ecstatic to pay off the vehicle in full.
"When we went to Springfield to cash the ticket in, I went straight to Mid Missouri Bank and paid off the Jeep. Every time I look at it, it brings a smile to my face to know that I'm not strapped with that payment for another three years. There was a couple hundred dollars left over, and it made it a little better Christmas. It made it a lot merrier than it would have been." When asked if she would continue to play the Lottery, Marshall indicated that she would probably stick to her routine. But, she's not expecting another win anytime soon. "I don't know if I could take another one. You know what they say, 'You're only supposed to take what you need.' That's all I needed. That was the answer to my prayers."
"Holiday Cash" is a $2 game that officially began on Oct. 24. The top prize is $25,000, and non-winning tickets are eligible for entry into the Missouri Lottery's second-chance promotion, "Holiday Magic." To learn more, visit Molottery.com.
