Music fills the air
A variety of holiday music will be performed during Homes for the Holidays activities this weekend.
Music will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with Sandy Hemphill and the Eugene Ware Elementary School Choir, followed by a performance by Jerry Elliott on the pipe organ at 11 a.m. John Bennett will give two consecutive performances on the classical guitar at 1:30 and 2:15 p.m. Local harpist Connie Wollenhaupt will perform at 3:30 p.m.
Sunday music will begin at 1 p.m. with Katie Blythe on the piano and organ, followed by the Presbyterian Bell Choir directed by Carol Crain at 2 p.m. Organist and pianist Ryan Goodbody and Amber Goodbody, a vocalist and pianist, will perform at 3 p.m. All guests are welcome and invited to join the church congregation for worship at 10:30 a.m., according to a statement from the church.
The combined Choir and Orchestra of the Community and Fort Scott Community College will present the Christmas portions of Handel's "Messiah" at 7 p.m. Sunday. This performance will be directed by Greg Turner. A reception will follow in the church parlor.
All of the musical performances will take place at the First Presbyterian Church, 308 S. Crawford St.
A salad luncheon will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday in Zimmerman Hall. Tickets for the meal cost $6 at the door.
Visitors may tour the church and enjoy Christmas music both days at no cost. Tour guides will be available to welcome guests and describe the church's architecture and history. Tickets for the Homes for the Holidays tour, which cost $10, will also be available at the door.
The local musical duo Fuss and Feathers will perform in the Grand Hall at the Fort Scott National Historic Site during its annual Candlelight Tour on Friday and Saturday. The Eugene Ware choir will also perform during Stocking Stuffer activities at 11 a.m. Saturday on the FSCC campus, 2108 S. Horton St.
