Benefit dinner to help Santa receives good response
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
Many Arcadians attended the Craw-Kan Telephone meeting earlier this month in Girard High School. Arcadia ladies whose names were drawn for the cash prizes were Maxine James, Shirley Garrett, and Thelma Medley. Congratulations!
The benefit dinner to help Santa come to Arcadia in December was delicious. Friends from out of town included the Coulter family from Mulberry. They say they often have breakfast at the Bearcat. Greeting folks that Sunday afternoon were three pastors, David Peterson, Christian Church; Roy Widmar and Don Talent from Open Door Mission. Thank you goes to the folks who cooked, baked and served the fine dinner. The response to the dessert table was splendid.
Jackson Chopra, the 4-year-old boy who was injured in a lawnmower accident in Pittsburg recently, lost his right arm above the elbow and is now doing well with his skin graft procedure. Family members are thankful for the prayers on his behalf. A good note is that Jackson is normally left-handed.
Christian Church sermon title on Sunday, November 8 was entitled "A Chosen People" taken from first Peter Chapter 2. It can be found www.sermons.logos.com (find sermons ... David L. Peterson IV) or www.facebook.com.kawika.peterson

Gary Peterson and Herman Tyler, Arcadia and Eldon Underwood from Garland area attended the Blue Grass Festival in Stockton, Mo., on Saturday evening. They were impressed with the Meyers family from Sheldon, Mo., who form a band all of their own.
Irene Carpenter Sutcliffe, Fort Scott celebrated her 80th birthday on Saturday, Nov. 7 with open house in the home of her niece Debra Martin in Fort Scott. Irene grew up in Oskaloosa, attended high school in Liberal, Mo., and was at one time telephone operator in Arcadia when she roomed in the Jewell Apartment building downtown. At that time, the telephone switchboard and office was located upstairs in the former IGA grocery store rock building on the corner of Race and Nelson streets.
Last week Lou and Betty Dehn visited her aunt and uncle in Ashfork, Ariz., just west of Flagstaff. They went to Sedona for recreation and dinner on Friday.
Saturday afternoon they met Betty's cousin from Glendale, west of Phoenix, for dinner before departing for a return flight back to Pittsburg.
Friends are sorry to have heard of the death of Dr. Karen Kay Ford, 65, Duncan, Okla., on Oct. 25. She was the daughter of Joe and Ethelyn Leist Boatright. Her grandmother was Deal Leist who was well known in Arcadia from the days when she brought her eggs and cream to town on Saturday and visited with town people.
In Nell Dikeman's 50 years ago item in the Fort Scott Tribune recently, she mentioned a former Arcadian, John Dobbins. His ad in 1959 read, "It is important that you have your hair cut right. Next time try the Dobbins Barber Shop. 3 North National Ave." John learned to barber under the guide-ship of his dad, Ed Dobbins who was a long time barber in Arcadia.
Paw Prints will be at the Arcadia Community Center on Dec. 8. Please call ahead for your appointment at (877) 887-7729.
