Free Ice Cream Social to be held at 6:30 p.m., Aug. 29 in Arcadia

Thursday evening front-porch guests at Mae Watt's home were Ruth Holland, Louise Holland and Judy Rawlings from Liberal, Mo., and Mary V. Shead. It turned into an ice-cream-cone party.

The next evening, the out of towners joined by John Rawlings attended the Our Gang "Breakfast for Supper" dinner in Arcadia Community Center. On Sunday evening guests at the same home were Mary V. Shead and a former grade school mate of Mae's, Delbert Shilling from Fort Scott, who grew up in his family home between Arcadia and Mulberry. They attended the Oak Grove Country school way back when. He was interested in seeing the changes Arcadia had made in the last few years.

Sunday evening, Cindy and Ralph Shead returned to their home in Carl Junction Mo., after a weekend spent with her Aunt and Uncle John and Ardith McKinney in Mountain Home, Ark. Saturday night they were in Bernie, Mo., where they spoke on Sunday morning in the Christian Church about their mission work with LATM, Learning and Teaching Ministry in Joplin, Mo.

Lou and Betty Dehn traveled to Kansas City and met three of their grandchildren at St. Lukes Hospital where two of the grandchildren's mother is being treated. The children are Chelsi Marie Riley from Lexington, Mo., and her cousins Cory and Elizabeth Long from Marshall, Mo. While in Arcadia, they entertained some of their grandmother's good friends and enjoyed playing in the park.

Bill Watt came from Independence, Mo., last weekend. He and Mae attended the 50th Wedding Anniversary Celebration of Hilda and Jerry Page in Arcadia Community Center on Saturday, Aug. 15. They enjoyed Sunday dinner at Gebhard's and on Monday Bill played golf in Girard with Mike Johnson.

Part of last week, Pastor David Peterson spent time in Wichita visiting his mother, grandmother and Bill Skidmore, who was hospitalized for hip surgery complication.

Others on the prayer list Sunday morning were: Emory Briggs, in Nowata, Okla.; Douglas Watt, in Wichita; Bill Dobbins, Frontenac and Bill Corporon III in Dallas, Texas.

Pastor David announced that he has been accepted as a correspondent student at the Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif.

Special announcement is inviting all for the Free Ice Cream Social to be held at Christian Church Bungalow on Saturday, Aug. 29, beginning at 6:30 p.m. All who like ice cream and cake are invited to attend.

During the Sunday School Hour, Vera Parrish taught McKenzie Melon, Josie Bryant and Andy Leichliter. He also assisted with the music, communion and offering. New comer to town and guest that morning was Henry Brown.

On Aug. 29, the JOY SS Class held its monthly meeting with 11 present. President Patty Peterson asked the meaning of the name Abraham. The answer is Father of Nations. A fine dinner was held. A special monetary offering from JOY Class and an individual gift were sent to Team Expansions, a mission group we help support. A thank you was given from the Jim Casey family. Special gift to the class was given by Patty and Gary Peterson for their 50th Anniversary. They spent the weekend in Branson to celebrate where their family joined them later.

Justin and Amanda Bailey, Fort Scott and big brother Dakota, are proud to announce the birth of their son and brother, Trevor Dean Bailey. Trevor was born on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott. Maternal grandparents are Sam and Vickie Haskew, Arcadia. Materinal great-grandmother is Mary Kunzler, Independence, Mo. Paternal grandparents are Larry and Bonnie Bailey, Nevada, Mo. Paternal great-granddparents are Eva and Delbert Readinger, Nevada, Mo. and Mary Bailey, Fort Scott.

Diane Goodbody, Fort Scott and Vickie Shead, rural Garland, attended a Word Explosion meeting held in Victory Christian Center in Tulsa, Okla., last weekend. Before returning home, they visited Vickie's mother, Shirley Applegarth and daughter, Mitzi and Joel Ray and the two little ones, Cademon and Atalie.

In the Nell Dikeman's 25 years ago items we learned that in l984 when the Ray Shepherd Motors team won the State Class B Ball game, that Ron Eldridge and Richie Clarkson, formerly of Arcadia, were on the team.

Condolences to the family of Elma Underwood who died Aug. 20, at St. John's Hospital in Joplin. The funeral was held in Cherry Grove Chuch on Sunday, Aug. 23 with burial in Large Cemetery under the direction of the Cheney-Witt Funeral Home.
