A group of children in the local area recently learned the importance of packing healthy lunches during the summer time.

Kansas State University Research and Extension Nutrition Assistant Sandy Winters visited with children enrolled in New Generation's Totally Awesome Radically Groovy Elementary Team (TARGET) program on May 29.

During the visit, Winters educated the youth on the importance of packing healthy food in their lunch boxes. Winters suggested the youth chose to drink milk instead of soda at meal time, and encouraged them to drink plenty of water and other fluids during the hot summer days.

"Get plenty of fluids," she said. "Drink lots of water."

Also during the visit, Winters urged the participants to eat a healthy breakfast every morning. Adding to Winters' advice about breakfast, TARGET instructor Angie Simon also encouraged the youth to eat breakfast each morning.

"Breakfast is very important, especially at target because we do a lot of things and use lots of energy," Simon said.
