Card offers relief from high perscription prices

The number of local residents who are finding some relief from the high cost of prescription medications has steadily increased since January.

According to former Bourbon County Commissioner Bill Brittain, Bourbon County's participation in the National Association of Counties' Prescription Drug Discount Card Program has helped many Bourbon County residents save money on some of their prescription refills.

"The numbers were up some and that means savings," Brittain said.

According to NACo data, more than 100 area residents used the prescription drug card to help lower the cost of nearly 220 prescriptions during the month of March. Those numbers are up from the 91 residents who used the card to cover 202 prescriptions in January.

An e-mail from Brittain said more than 1,000 counties across the United States are currently participating in the prescription card program. Thus far, there has been more than 14 million prescriptions filled through the program, which generated $170 million in savings.
