McGennis Youth Center open for families during summer

For a day of good fishing and family fun, consider visiting the Mary A. McGennis Agricultural Park and Youth Center. The 160-acre recreational facility, open to the public, is located in Rich Hill, Mo.

Bass, catfish and sunfish are abundant in the 4.7-acre lake, which also has a swim area with sand beach and nearby playground. Sand volleyball and lighted tennis and basketball courts are available. The youth center features camp sites, rustic cabins, a nature walking trail and a horse-riding trail. The two large shelter houses have grills; smaller picnic areas are scattered throughout the center.

Activities include a fishing derby in June and a family-oriented play under the stars in August, with the old barn serving as a backdrop. The renovated barn has a full kitchen with dining area and modern restrooms. Other buildings include a restored chapel, available for weddings and receptions, and an old school house. An annual barbecue and fundraiser auction is held each September, featuring horse-drawn hay rides and an antique car show.

The family farm was donated by Mary A. McGennis to benefit area youth. University of Missouri Extension councils in Vernon, Bates, St. Clair and Henry counties appoint the nonprofit's board. The center is also home to a three-day summer camp for underprivileged children. The facility celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2007 with a fund-raising drive to upgrade facilities. Various groups volunteer for maintenance projects.

Facilities can be reserved by calling (417) 484-3216. Swimming in the lifeguard area starts the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and is open throughout the summer Wednesday through Sunday, from 1 to 7 p.m. To reach the youth center, travel U.S. 71 Highway to Rich Hill, go west on Highway A for six miles to WW Highway, then drive south 4.5 miles. Designed for family activities in a rural setting, the youth center offers a pleasant experience whether you want to plan a family reunion or just hike to the gazebo at Inspiration Point for a view of the sun setting over the lake.
