Fort Scott Community College's women were close to getting one of their biggest victories of the season Wednesday night at Arnold Arena. But Cowley jumped out in front at the start of the second overtime and held on for an 85-81 victory in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.

The decision helped break a four-way tie for third place in the division with Cowley, Johnson County and Independence. Indy was also a winner as it beat Highland while Johnson County lost to Coffeyville.

The Greyhounds (6-5 East, 13-10 overall) trailed 62-59 with 4:34 left in regulation. But Leondra Doomes-Stephens scored a layup, then Monet Fernandes put Fort Scott ahead with a pair of free throws.

Elena Yankova put Cowley (7-4, 16-7) in front with 3:04 to go when she made a pair of technical free throws.

Valencia Kelly -- who scored a career-high 34 points -- put the 'Hounds back in front when she took a defensive rebound all the way for a layup with 47 seconds to go. She was fouled on the basket but missed the free throw.

Yankova missed a shot at the other end and Fernandes rebounded. With 14.2 seconds to go, Kylie Shepard drew a foul but made only one of the two free throws.

The Greyhounds failed to take advantage of the opportunities Cowley gave them at the free-throw line. They missed 17 of the 41 charity tosses they took in the game.

Gabrielle Curtis forced overtime when she drove all the way for a layup with 6.3 seconds to go. Doomes-Stephens drove the other way back upcourt but a running one-hander was no good as the horn sounded.

Doomes-Stephens hit a three-point shot to open overtime. Eventually, the 'Hounds found themselves up 72-68 with 2:27 on the clock.

But Yankova started and ended a 6-2 run that ended when she hit a jumper with seven seconds to go, tying it at 74-74 to force a second OT.

Yankova scored first in the second extra session as well and Brianna Gonzales -- who didn't enter the game until midway through the second half and was playing because Cowley had several players who had fouled out or had four fouls -- followed up to make it 78-74 with 2:58 remaining.

Doomes-Stephens and Kelly made back-to-back layup to bring Fort Scott within 82-81 with 35 seconds to go.

However, Gonzales clinched the game for Cowley when she hit a three-point from the right corner with 5.7 seconds to go -- the Tigers' only three-point goal of the entire night.

Doomes-Stephens, who had only two points at halftime, added 15 points to the Greyhounds' total while Fernandes scored 14 points as she made all five of her shots from the field.

Curtis led Cowley with 22 points while Yankova and Bebe Holloway each followed with 16 and Kaneesha Lee and Whitney Williams each scored 10. Yankova scored half her total in the overtime periods.

The Greyhounds started the game making seven of their first 10 shots from the field but finished at 42 percent on 27 of 64.

Cowley held a 54-47 rebounding advantage. Kelly had 11 boards and Fernandes 10 for Fort Scott.
