Uniontown teams sweep Chetopa in league play

CHETOPA -- Uniontown's girls broke a nine-game losing streak by beating Chetopa here Tuesday night, 60-39, in a Three Rivers League contest.

Meanwhile, Uniontown's boys won their second game in a row, a 67-49 win over the Green Hornets, after they had dropped five of their previous six.

Chetopa (2-1 TRL, 6-7 overall) entered the girls' contest as a co-leader at the top of the TRL along with Crest. St. Paul took over a share by beating Pleasanton while Crest was playing a non-league opponent. The Hornets fell to fourth place.

Uniontown (1-2, 3-11) broke out of a three-way tie for last place with Altoona-Midway and Marmaton Valley while also leapfrogging over Pleasanton into fifth place.

The Eagles led 17-13 after one period of play and also outscored the Hornets in the second half, 34-16.

"This one felt really good," Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said. "The girls really gave good effort tonight."

Abbie Smith led the Eagles with 19 points and also dished four assists. She connected on eight of 15 shots from the field.

Uniontown had a pair of double-doubles as Kait Spainhoward had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Jacy Ermel had 10 points and 10 boards.

Taylor Rathbun dished six assists while Smith had four assists to go along with eight rebounds.

Ben Dixon led Uniontown's boys (2-1, 7-7) with 19 points while Cody Tinsley added 14. The Eagles led 17-8 after one period and never trailed, enjoying a lead that was as large as 25 points in the first half.

"We came out and played with a lot of intensity early in the game," Uniontown head coach Nathan Hinrichs said. "This was a good win against a solid opponent."

Chetopa fell to 1-2, 7-6 with the loss.

The Eagles will travel to play rival Marmaton Valley in a league contest Friday night.
