Layne Short
Layne Short, 78, a resident of Kansas City, Mo., passed away Dec. 18, 2008, at his home. He was born in Davenport, Okla., in September of 1930, the son of Ralph L. and Opal E. Short, and moved to Bronson, Kan., at an early age. He graduated from Bronson High School in 1948. He was a veteran, having served eight years in the United States Air Force. Staff Sergeant Short served one year in Korea. After his discharge in June of 1959, Layne and his wife, Yvonne returned to Bronson where they owned and operated Short's Grocery until April of 1961, after which they moved to the Shawnee Mission, Kan., area. He retired after nearly 25 years at the General Motors Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kan., retiring in 1987. He was a 50 year member of both Bronson Chapter No. 65 and the Bourbon Lodge No. 268.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Danley Short. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Short, who was manager of the Finley Lumber Company for many years, and his mother, Opal Short, who worked at the Bank of Bronson for more than 40 years.
Following cremation, the Rev. David Kuns will conduct graveside services at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 23, at the United States National Cemetery in Fort Scott, with Masonic Rites by the Bronson Masonic Lodge. Military Honors will be provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No. 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends and family may meet at the Cheney Witt Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Memorials are suggested to the Robert and Yvonne Short Family Fund, in care of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel, 201 S.
