Free Thanksgiving Dinner

Due to the Second Annual Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov.15, for all citizens of Arcadia and surrounding area, in the Community Center beginning at 6:30 p.m., the Festival for all ages that was to be held the same evening in Arcadia Christian Church has been canceled.
Lou and Betty Dehn attended the Gene Bicknell theater, Mansion America, in Branson, last week. They enjoyed Bobby Vinton in Concert. Seated in the audience was Tony Orlando. Betty was excited to have her picture taken with him, especially for her mother. She had copies made for her friends.
On Sunday, Nov. 9, the firemen were called to the Alvarado home on East Walnut Street where they soon put out an attic fire.
Peggy Wickstrom was met in the Joplin Bus Station by her cousin Ralph Shead on her birthday, Oct. 24. After visiting his LATM office at College Press, he took her to Mick and Ellie Corporon, her Aunt and Uncle's home at College View Manor where she spent overnight. Another cousin, Lisa Blodgett visited them Saturday morning. The two young ladies enjoyed lunch in Joplin before traveling to Arcadia for a birthday dinner at the home of their Aunt, Mary V. Shead. Lisa's birthday was Oct. 13, while Ms. Shead's will be in December. All three blew out the candles and sang to each other. Lisa returned to her home in Republic, Mo., that evening. During the five day visit, Peggy attended Arcadia Christian Church, enjoyed the church dinner and that evening had dinner at the Shead farm where she visited with cousins Larry and Vickie, Mark, Haley and Katy Shead and friend Cayla Probert, a student in Fort Scott Community College. Monday evening, Larry, Vickie and Mary V. Shead took Peggy to Joplin where they met more cousins at Ryans Cafeteria including Dan and Phyllis Corporon, from Neosho, Mo., Ralph and Cindy Shead from Carl Junction, Mo.; Ashley and Matthew Shead, Joplin, plus the Aunt and Uncle Mick and Ellie Corporon who hosted the dinner. Early the next morning, Peggy boarded the bus for her return home in Oklahoma City.
Ernestine and Mae Watt attended the recent funeral of Edith LaForte in Bedene' Funeral Parlor. Our sympathy goes to the family who were Arcadia residents for many years.
The first six workers to arrive for the Crawford County Election Board meeting held in Frontenac Senior Citizen's Building on Oct. 29 were Margie DeLange, Brazilton; Carolyn Walstrom and Bonnie Prideaux both of Girard and Betty Brunk of Arma, Patty Peterson and Mary V. Shead Arcadia. They and many others were taught the rules and regulations by Don Pyle, County Clerk assisted by Paula Zeller. The Arcadia Poll manager, Linda Morris attended a similar meeting on a different day.
In Arcadia on election day, Kathy McWilliams was the first voter, number 100 was Bill Bridgewater at 4:40 p.m., and the last voter was Edwin Woellhof numbered 141. There were 12 Provoisional Ballots, 86 had pre-voted.
Matt Chaplin and Geoffrey Clark were observers from Fort Scott.
On Friday Nov. 7, The Holly Reed Trio sang from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., in Hastings Hardback Coffee Cafe in Pittsburg, Kan.
Jude and Fannie Mae Christianson of Independence, Mo., enjoyed dinner in PIttsburg with her Uncle Walter Foulk, Arcadia and Susie Stelle, Pittsburg. Fannie Mae was recently featured in the Pittsburg paper as an artist formerly from Arcadia.
On Thursday evening, Nov. 6, Channel 14, the 4-State Hero featured was the late Lloyd Chapman who served from 1942-1946. He was married to Weymouth Jones, formerly from Arcadia, now living in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The Hero graduated from Arcadia High School in 1941.
