Fort Scott Community College's women's basketball team got their season off to a strong start at Arnold Arena Wednesday night, whipping up on a poor-shooting, turnover-prone Ottawa University junior varsity squad in their season opener, 88-57.
The Greyhounds were by no means perfect themselves, this being their first official game. But they had a few stretches nearing that, especially at the start of each half.
Fort Scott made five of its first six shots from the field in going out to a 10-0 lead in just a little over three minutes of play. The lead was 44-18 at the half as Leondra Doomes-Stephens scored the Greyhounds' last 11 points of the period. Fort Scott saw Doomes-Stephens scored 10 of its first 16 points of the second half as well.
The lead eventually grew to 76-28 before Ottawa began to find some success behind the three-point line as the Braves scored the next 11 points.
Doomes-Stephens finished 13 of 17 from the field, scoring 29 points for the 'Hounds. She also had seven rebounds, four assists, six steals and two blocked shots.
Freshmen Joy Hathaway and Shadara Hampton, both starters, each scored eight points in their FSCC debut. Hathaway was four of five from the field. Hampton also contributed four assists and five steals.
Parsons freshman Tashanda Jackson also had seven rebounds for the 'Hounds as they outboarded Ottawa 54-37.
Fort Scott shot 49 percent from the field as it made 37 of 76 field-goal attempts. Ottawa shot 32 percent on 16 of 50.
The Greyhounds also picked up 20 steals as Ottawa committed 31 turnovers. Fort Scott turned the ball over 23 times.
The 'Hounds will travel to Houston this weekend to play a pair of top Texas teams. San Jacinto will be Friday's opponent in a 7:30 p.m. contest. Blinn is the opposition Saturday at 2. The Buccaneers were 26-6 last season and just missed out on a pre-season poll appearance.
The Greyhounds will not play at home again until a Dec. 3 date with Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa. That will be their only other home game before the holiday break.
