FCE studies meal rituals, elects officers

Starlite Family and Community Education (F.C.E.) met Oct. 16, at the home of Betty Ruddick. Lois Williams was the co-hostess.
Special guest, Ann Ludlum, Bourbon County Extension Agent, presented the lesson, "Everybody at the Table, It's Time to Eat!" Routines and rituals of mealtimes were discussed by several members. A skit was presented. Meal times of yesteryear were compared to mealtimes of today. Research has proved that families who eat together around a table have fewer "family problems." Also, the children are at less risk of doing drugs, are more apt to fit in socially, and in general, do better in school. Table-time is when children leam some social manners such as passing the food around, not talking with a full mouth, removing your cap while you eat, taking turns talking and even learning to listen. Meal time should be a happy time. Not only do people enjoy socializing while eating, but food will digest better in pleasant surroundings.
The business meeting opened with President Sandy Rylander leading in the Flag Salute and the Club Collect. Betty Johnson read the minutes of the September meeting. Clarice Russell gave the Treasurer's report. Twelve members and one guest answered roll call by sharing a recipe. 138 Community Volunteer hours were recorded.
Council member Lots Williams gave an announcement concerning the Fall Follies. It will be held in the north end of the Community Christian Church on Thursday, November 20, at 9:30 a.m. There will be a pot luck luncheon at noon. The public is encouraged to attend.
Barbara Stockebrand will present "Holiday Connections" and Janae McNally will present "Chocolate! Chocolate! Chocolate!"
A poster was made and exhibited announcing that the week of October 12 -- 18 is National F.C.E. week.
Betty Johnson reported that plans are underway for the 2009 State Conference which will be held at Memorial Hall in Pittsburg.
Officers for 2009 were installed with a ceremony using an old shirt; however, they won't take office until January.
The officers will be: President Joan Isaac, Vice President Wilma Endy, Secretary Betty Johnson, Treasurer Clarice Russell, and Council Members Doris Ericson and Lois Williams.
The meeting adjourned and refreshments were served.
