The most priceless heritage of any child, or in fact, any individual, is a good home. The existence of the Goodlander Home is our community makes available this heritage to every boy or girl in Bourbon County who by reason of circumstances does not have such a home of his own. To our classrooms in the high school and junior college come the ones who have been longest at the Goodlander Home, hence the success of failures of the work of the Goodlander Home is most evident in this group. I am happy to be able to say that the pupils who come here from the Goodlander Home are a real contribution to our student body. Since the Goodlander Home is best judged by the product produced, it gives me a great deal of satisfaction to commend the Goodlander Home to the community as an institution worthy of your continued support and encouragement. The directors of this very worthwhile community institution merit our continued financial support and personal interest.

The military route, which one of the plaques depicts, is shown adjacent to the picture. Congress first authorized funds for the road in 1836. It was completed in 1844. It passed through Fort Scott roughly along what is now the Highway 69 route connecting it with Fort Leavenworth to the north and Fort Gibson (now Oklahoma) and Smith (Arkansas) on the south, along the Indian frontier.
