History remembered in celebration: rain causes changes, cancellations

Allen and Linda Watt of Wichita went to Hutchison on Friday to visit their son Douglas Watt and his partner Larry Knouft. The two fellows have a booth, Cappuccino Connection, Purveyor of Fine Drinks at the Kansas State Fair. Douglas gave his Dad tickets to attend the Concerts by Kansas and Styx.

Tom and Phyllis Watt came from Lees Summitt, Mo to spend Saturday with Mae Watt. They brought carry-in dinner and did many jobs. Back in their home, the couple attended a birthday party in the park for their grandson, Trent Siemens, 2 years old.

This month, the AHS Our Gang will be meeting on a Friday Eve, Sept. 26 and not on the usual Saturday night.

In the Arcadia Christian Church on Sunday morning, September 14, the congregation was pleased to have Mark Shead at the piano and his wife and daughter, Haley and Katy in the audience. Honors for recent birthday offerings were for Jenny Edwards, Trent Siemens and Karen Watt. Announcements were made for services at Arma CAre Center that afternoon, November 2, CAmpus Christians from PSU will be special guests in Arcadia for services and dinner. The Class No. 10 first meeting this fall will be Wednesday, Sept. 24 after the summer break.

This past Sunday, Josie Bryant and Liberty Westfall were pleased to receive pictures showing them attending the Arcadia Festival with Jodie Bryant. Christie Parrish brought the paper to their classsroom and with teacher, Patty Peterson's help, they used them in their craft work. Marissa Mangahan was also in class that morning.

Birth of a New Community was Pastor David Peterson's sermon title. He read from Matthew l-18 etc. Plans are for a baptisimal service on September 28.

Although the Old Settler's parade had to be canceled because of rain on Sat morning, September 13, the town did become active with cake walks under umbrellas, the Friday Night Concert did take place in the Ball Park and the Saturday Evening one was moved to the Community building. The Firemen had a good turn out for their Barbecue dinner at noon on Saturday. The Community Sing was alive on Sunday evening. Many thanks go to the Co-chairman of the Old Settler's Festival committee, Amber Schmitz and Candice Westfall who worked hard for many months.

On display in the Community Center on Saturday of the Festival via Computer was "Arcadia History in Photos" compiled by Barbara Scott over a period of two years. The CD has 576 photos from the late l800's to present time. Pictures were donated by the following: Susie Stelle (including her 1975 collection of Black and white photos), Barbara Scott, Bob Adams, Bill Buchanan, Kay Burr, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Dunn, Bill Dobbins, Ray Dobbins, Thelma Fowler, Mary Gardner, Kathy Henegar, Barbara Skidmore Jobes, Joyce Maycumber, Joyce Gabel Niebrugge, Gary and Pat Peterson, Judy Rawlings, Rae Ann Rose, Mary V. Shead, Jo Swezey and The Christian Church.

On the cover of each CD is the picture of arcadia sign with teenager pictures of the late Lewis Corporon, Doris Fowler Stelle, Madeline Murray, Margaret Poteet Holmberg and Paul Shead. The CD's are available in the Genealogy room at the Pittsburg Library.

The next meeting of the Cato Historical Preservation Association will be Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 6:30 p.m., in Arcadia Community Center. The Cato Tour is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 8 to meet in the Cato Church at 10 a.m.
