Bourbon County United Methodist annual picnic scheduled

Ronnie Brown and his wife were in Hays, Kan., last week, where Ronnie attended the Kansas Water Authority Meeting, representing the Marais Des Cygene Basin Advisory Committee. On the way back home they stopped at Salina for a Kansas Association of Conservation Districts Rural Developmental Committee Meeting.
Lloyd Callow hosted his children and grandchildren in Bronson, at the Thousand Hills Resort, August 8 through 13 for an early celebration of his 60th wedding anniversary. Those attending were Rick Biles and his wife, and Elizabeth, Topeka; Beth and Kelli Ludlum and Matt Schertz, Washington DC and Joe Ludlum and his wife. The group also celebrated the Biles' 34th anniversary. William Biles was unable to attend due to a work and travel conflict with his summer employment in Washington D.C. On Sunday, Aug. 10, the entire group were guests of Kelli Ludlum at the Texas Land and Cattle Co. Steakhouse for lunch.
On Saturday, Aug. 16, the ladies of Hiattville U.M.W. hosted a Fellowship Tea at the church.
The guests were welcomed by Beverly Davis, president of the Unit. She also announced the program which was opened with prayer by Pastor Akins, followed with the group singing "This Is The Day The Lord Has Made." Special music was presented by Pastor Akins, singing "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" accompanying herself on the Auto Harp.
Jessica Schwalm was the speaker of the afternoon, telling about and showing pictures of her mission trip to Honderas in May and her summer job in Montana.
Sandra Upshaw of Iola, who is the units Big Sister, was given a special welcome.
The afternoon program closed by all singing "God Be With You Till We Meet Again" and prayer by Pastor Akins.
Door prizes were presented to Upshaw, Kim Romig and Dora Page. The refreshment table featured a floral arrangement of Black Eyed Susans. Arrangements of wheat and sunflowers decorated the other tables. Cakes decorated with smiley faces were served by Mabel Miller. Yellow punch was served by Glenda Miller. Lavone Page was in charge of serving coffee.
Churches represented were Girard, Iola, Farlington, Fort Scott and Hiattville.
Visitors welcomed at worship, August 17 were Howard Ledbetter, a former member of the community and Steve Kramer and his wife, who are a new couple in the community.
Pastor Akins sermon was titled "Pass It On." Scripture was read from Psalm 8, Genesis 1:1-24 and Matthew 28:16-20.
Don't forget that Mapleton is the prayer church partner for the next three months.
The monthly administrative board was held immediately following Sunday School with Ronnie Brown presiding.
The Bourbon County United Methodist annual picnic is August 24. Fellowship at 5 p.m., carry in food at 6 p.m.and program is at 7 p.m..
Steve Plaster and his wife have returned to their home in Florida, after having spent the last two and a half months at their home in Hiattville.
Steve has taught the Senior Adult Class since they have been here. Beverly Davis, on behalf of the class, presented him a monetary gift in appreciation Sunday morning.
Several from this area attended the Friends of 4-H annual picnic, Monday evening.
Earl Maloney attended a family reunion in Bronson, Saturday.
