News from Arcadia: Anniversaries, birthdays

Phaedra Cherry who had been visiting her family in Girard came to Arcadia to see her Grandmother, Helen Sisney. Joining them was her cousin Courtney Sisney, rural Arcadia on Monday evening. Phaedra, soon will be leaving her home in Olathe with a friend, driving to Florida where the two young ladies will be working at Disney's Worlds Of Fun.

In an article by Marilyn Miller in Ft. Scott Tribune recently told the story of her sister Darlene who used to help serve Hot Coffee and sandwiches to the soldiers on the troop trains that stopped in Ft. Scott during WWII. Many of the ladies would write letters to the lonesome soldiers. One day Darlene told her sister she was writing no more because she had met a tall, dark haired and very handsome sailor from Arcadia, Kansas by the name of Ray Dobbins. Thus began a beautiful courtship by mail. He was a radioman on a ship. Soon as the war was over, she went to San Diego, Calif. where they were married on July 9, 1945. This love story has lasted 63 years and they are still happy with family living in Ft. Scott, KS. Arcadians remember Ray as a young man attending Arcadia Schools and graduating in 1942 from AHS.

Our Gang of AHS fame, will be meeting Saturday evening, August 23 in the Arcadia Community Center, 6:30 p.m. On the menu this month will be Gebhardt's Chicken, home-made ice cream, cake or pie. RSVP is requested by August 20, call Pat at (620) 347-8193

Mrs. Kathy Probert with daughters Kayla and Olivia of Carthage were dinner guests of Larry and Vickie Shead on Monday evening. Kaya is enrolled in Ft. Scott Community College this semester and will be rooming in the Shead home.

Another well known former Arcadian was named in the 50 Years Ago, l958 column of Ft. Scott Tribune recently. It told Miss Carolyn Fowler of Arcadia, placed third in the beauty contest held at the Arma Homecoming. She is the daughter of the late Glen and Carrie Fowler. Carolyn now lives in California with her family.

Delton Jr. and wife Billi Watt with Joseph of Fayette, Mo. met Tom and Phyllis Watt from Lees Summit, Mo. at the State Fair in Sedalia, Mo. to attend the various activities and especially the concert by Country Western Singer, Josh Turner.

On the 62nd anniversary of Mae and Delton's wedding, all four sons, Bill, Delton Jr., Tom and Allen called to offer congratulations in memory of their Dad and gave thanks for many happy years together in their home.

Edith Bridgewater, the fine cook at The Bearcat in Arcadia has announced the engagement of her granddaughter, Shelby Lynn Rhodes, daughter of Mark and Terri Rhodes, Carl Junction, Mo. to Kyle Lynn Thomas of Girard.

The youth in Arcadia Christian Church on Sunday, Aug. 17 were Josie Bryant, Marissa and Liberty Mongahan, Kennyn Baldwin, Allyson Feltner, Angela Casey and Cheyenne Mellon. All were glad to welcome and hear from former youth teachers, Jace and Jesse Pavlik and 4 month old Hazel from Joplin. Each was given a picture of the baby. In the future, they will be moving to Tulsa, Okla.

Birthday offering was given for both the Pavliks and Mary Ilene Watt. At the brief meeting of the new church board last week, Wayne Parrish was selected to be Chairman of the board. They will meet following the JOY supper and business meeting on Monday evening Aug. 17.

The SS lesson as well as the sermon this Sunday had to do with guarding your tongue -- taken from James 3. Pastor David advised all to be an image of Christ in what we say, filling ourselves with righteousness. Remember Jesus is the head of the Church. In closing he said, "May the Peace of God and the God of Peace be with each one." He will be speaking at the Arma Care Center at 3 p.m. on Sunday Aug. 24.

August 9, Ralph and Cindy Shead attended her Class Reunion with her friends who graduated from Dewey, OK. High School. Her class first met in Phillips Hotel in Bartlesville for a brunch. About 65 grads then met at Wool-a-Roc for dinner, visiting and programs followed throughout the evening.
