(1908)

Roy Coe, a Frisco brakeman, and son of H. Coe, the well known veteran, was attacked and severely bitten this afternoon by a big shepherd dog near Riley's flag shanty at the Frisco's Wall Street crossing. The dog's attack was not actuated by anything Mr. Coe had done. The young man had been standing perfectly still when he started to turn and walk away. The dog made a lunge forward and imbedded its teeth into Roy's right leg near the hip. Roy came uptown at once and had the wounds cauterized to prevent further trouble. The owner of the dog is not known, but the animal should be killed. H. Coe, the boy's father, related a personal incident. He said that 14 years ago he was bitten by a dog. The accident occurred in the month of September and every year during September a lump will form where the old bite was made.

Jitters, the little fox terrier pup belonging to Claude Coyan, has disappeared from home. Quite a little anxiety is being felt by the neighbors because

The city is contemplating a tax on beer sellers as a source of revenue and is making a study of tax levies in other cities over the state of 3.2 percent beverages. Mayor Harry C. Brooks said the taxes in other cities would be examined in an effort to get an idea of what a fair tax here would be. He added that in the event the state places a tax on the beverage that facet will also have to be taken into consideration. It has been estimated that at least 16 places in Fort Scott are selling beer.

Twenty-eight arrests were made and $89 in fines collected by the police department during the month of July, according to the reports filed by the chief of police and Police Judge Dan Lardner with the city commission.

After 19 rainless days, a light shower moistened the Fort Scott area Saturday night, leaving just enough water to be measured in the metal rain gauge at the city's official weather station. About .13 of an inch was recorded at the Konantz Funeral Home which keeps monthly temperature and rainfall statistics.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Several major commercial banks today raised their prime lending rates by one-half percentage point to 11 percent, the highest level in nearly six months. The 10.5 percentage rate had stood since Feb. 28.
