100 YEARS AGO
(1908)
Will Barr, the expert drummer, has been signed by the manager of the Vaudette Theatre to play at the performances Saturday evening. Mr. Barr operates the drums and bells. When the show opens for nightly performances after Sept. 1, Mr. Barr will be the regular musical attraction.
Some weeks ago, residents of East Fort Scott held a mass meeting and among other things asked for at the hands of the governing powers of the city were an extension of water service; addition to the Margrave schoolhouse; and a fire department. The matter of extending the water connection has been threshed out and the East Side got about half of what it had petitioned for. The school affair is going on until the new high school building is provided. The fire department question has not been settled yet.
Robert Preston, of the regular army, has returned home after serving in the signal corps three years. He is the son of A. Preston.

Speaking of antique books, Oak Travis, of South Scott Avenue, told a Tribune reporter that he has a book at home that is 240 years old. It was printed in 1674.
Effective pitching by Bob Willard was the potent factor in the Maguire team defeating the YMCA club in the Armory League last evening played under the flood lights on the South Main Street Athletic Field. The final score was 6-1. Willard allowed 3 hits, two of them by O'Farrell. Wayne Shields pitched for the "Y" boys. He gave four hits, two of them by Ray Brinkman.
Miss Esther Bell, of the accounting department of the Western Insurance Companies office, will take her vacation starting Monday.
Miss Wilma Shipley, of the Western Insurance Companies office, will spend here vacation at her home in Mapleton.
Miss Juanita Power, of the claims department of the Western Insurance Companies, will take her two-week vacation starting Monday.
Improvements are being made to the McQuitty tourist cabins on North National Avenue.

Among 110 graduates who received master's degrees at summer graduate commencement ceremonies at Kansas State College of Pittsburg were John Edward Davis, Uniontown; Charles Dobbins, Arcadia; Delbert Fluty, Fort Scott; Florence Hughes Hill, Pleasanton; Wayne McElroy and Walter Wood, Fort Scott; and Eileen Thompson, Bronaugh.
Foodtown's rip-snortin' buck sale: Del Monte tomato catsup, 6 bottles $1; Val Vits sliced peaches, 4 No 2 1/2 cans $1; Mussleman's applesauce, 7 No. 303 cans $1; Pillsbury cake mix, 7 pkgs. $1; Charmin tissue, 12 rolls $1; Foodtown's Oleo, six 1-lb. cartons $1; Del Monte fruit cocktail, 5 No. 303 cans $1.
Mr. and Mrs. Ken Edwards have sold the residence at 1310 Horton to Dr. and Mrs. James Taylor. The sale was completed by the Crain Reality Co.
Billie's Ceramic Shop is open as usual from 10 a.m. to 5 pm., Monday through Friday, and by special appointment.

Mr. and Mrs. Russell Pennie, 305 South Judson, will observe their 70th wedding anniversary Aug. 8 quietly at their home.
Hazel Burt, Uniontown, and Floyd Crites, Arcadia, each won a $5 beef certificate awarded by the Southeast Kansas CowBelles during the Bourbon County Fair.
Three Fort Scott students who have received scholarships to attend Pittsburg State University include Terri Crain, Kansas CPA Scholarship; and Patricia Hicks and Steven Ronsick, Dellinger Scholarships.
