100 YEARS AGO
(1908)
While in Los Angeles the other day Fred Hornaday came across several Fort Scott men. When he struck town Fred called up Harry Wing and Mr. Wing, who is a traveling salesman, came down to meet Mr. Hornaday. They went around to Lamb Brothers offices, which seem to be a rendezvous for Fort Scott boys. Before they talked very long there were several Fort Scotters present, they dropping in by mere chance. They were Charles Rucker, E.C. Bright, Theo Stacy and Gordon Lamb, Le Servoss, Messrs. Wing and Hornaday.
G.W. Marble and wife arrived home from Denver this afternoon. They attended the national convention there and later visited some Colorado resorts.
Miss Fern Pasley, cashier at Randoph's, went to Arcadia this afternoon to spend a few days visiting relatives.
Miss Gladys Konantz, Arcadia, is in the city. She has been attending the Chautauqu.
J.I. Sheppard went to Kansas City this morning.
Sidney Kellogg is in from Bandera.

At the Fox Liberty Theatre Wednesday only -- The picture we had to bring back, "The State Fair." Eight big stars include Will Rogers, Janet Gaynor, Lew Ayres, Sally Eilers, Victor Jury, Norman Foster, Frank Craven, Louise Dresser. No advance in prices, 10 cents and 25 cents.
The Pants Club will have a summer dance Friday night at the Bridal Veil Park pavilion. The V.G. Ange music will be provided.
Lawrence Westerhouse of the Tribune-Monitor and his brother, Albert, and Ray Ewing were three ambitious boys who saw the Century of Progress Exposition at Chicago, making the trip by car. They were very thrifty in expenses, as they stayed in tourist camps and saw more for less money than anyone to date.
PAWNEE STATION -- Everyone, don't forget the ice cream social on the church lawn Friday evening. There will be a program of accordion music and cowboy singing.
During the storm Saturday night, Robert Anderson's barn was struck by lightning.

Lt. Cmdr. Floyd H. Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charley Brown of 837 S. Crawford, returned recently to San Diego from the Far East on the aircraft carrier USS Hornet. Brown will be assigned to the ship for another six months. A surprise visitor at the Charley Brown home Monday was Lt.. Cmdr. Don Des Spain of the Navy Bureau, Washington, D.C., who was enroute with his wife and family to Maffett Field, near San Francisco, where he has been assigned as personnel pilot. Commanders Brown and Des Spain were flying buddies for six years.
A new boiler and heating system is being installed at Mary Queen of Angels Church and St. Mary's School by Darling and Maguire Sales Co.

Citizens National Bank has clinched the championship of the local Junior Babe Ruth League, sporting a 11-0 record. Team members include Johnny Spears, Mike Watson, David Thomas, Don Zornes, Paul Smith, Jeff Lawless, Cecil Tarter, Brian Johnston, Justin Harvey, Kent Hayes, Chris Karleskint and Aaron Witt.
