Lester C. Ramsey, 95, Kansas City, Kan., went home to glory Sunday, June 8, 2008, at Providence Medical Center. Visitation for friends and former students was held on Monday, June 16, at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church followed by the Memorial Service at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family suggests memorial contributions to Trinity United Methodist Church, 5010 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. 66104.
Lester was born September 24, 1912, near Uniontown, Kan. He married Martha Elizabeth Hardin on August 12, 1935 in Fort Scott, Kan. Lester received a B.S. in Education and a B.S. in Commerce at Pittsburg State Teacher's College in 1935, and an M.A. in Business at the University of Iowa in 1938. He taught math and coached girls' basketball at Uniontown High School in 1936 and 1937. He was hired as an assistant track coach and business instructor at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kan. in 1938, serving as head track coach from 1944 to 1946. He retired in 1980 having taught mostly shorthand and business classes. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Victory Drive Senior Citizens, and the Kansas City, Kan., Garden Club. During his summers he did road work around Uniontown and Fort Scott, and worked for Railway Express at Union Station and for the Kansas City, Kan. Parks and Recreation Dept. He was a member of the Wyandotte County and the Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha H. Ramsey in January of 1999, who taught many years at Chelsea and Roosevelt grade schools and his son, Major Milton Hardin Ramsey in March of 1971, in the service of his country. He is survived by a daughter, Martha Ann Empson and husband Paul, Chadron, Neb.; a daughter-in-law Kathleen and husband Rev. Robert Lively, Columbia, Mo.; nine grandchildren: Mark Empson, Plainville, Conn.; Laura Empson, Chadron, Neb.; Gary Ramsey, Dallas, Texas; Pamela Ramsey, Columbia, Mo.; Ronald Ramsey, South Pasadena, Calif.; Kathleen Baurichter, Springfield, Mo.; Martha McLaughlin, St. Joseph, Mo.; Luanne Marshall, Casper, Wyo.; and Philip Lively, Kingsville, Mo.; and 11 great-grandchildren.
