100 YEARS AGO

(1908)

Leslie Liepman, Dr. M.F. Jarrett, Will Fortney, D.C Congdon and R.C. Campbell went to Yates Center this morning to attend the funeral of their Scottish Rite brother, Dr. Burke, the Episcopal rector whose death was announced yesterday.

The swimming pool at the Denniscomb Bath House is now open and ready for use. These are very fine accommodations.

W.F. Cline, and friend of Chief Mendenhall, was in the city last evening on a short visit to the chief. He told the chief that he sold to the city 13 years ago the horse that is at present being used on the city cart. He left this morning for southern Kansas. He is looking or a location for an undertaking establishment.

The tornado east of town Saturday night wrought damage at Lath Branch Cemetery, blowing down tombstones and ornamental trees.

Fort-five years ago this spring a tornado struck the town of Prescott and did a lot of damage, aside from taking several lives.

L.A. Schaulis, of east of the city, standing in a wagon bed yesterday, tripped on a board lying in the wagon, and falling suffered a fracture of his left hand. He was treated at the Main Street Mercy Hospital.

"Uncle" Bob Ramsey, of Uniontown, 96 years of age, is reported in a serious condition at Main Street Mercy Hospital, following a major operation performed there yesterday.

Dr. F.E. O'Neil, of Prescott, was here this morning on professional business.

Ernest H. Morrison, of the Western Insurance Companies office, with his wife and daughter, moved this week from 323 Andrick Street to 714 South Main.

Teen Talk (By Connie Campbell)--"Showboat" was the theme for the junior-senior reception held at Eugene Ware. Marvin Post, junior class president, welcomed the seniors and Gary Clayton, senior class president, responded. Kathy Hewett sang "Who's Sorry now?" and "Love Letters in the Sand." A toe dance was done by Marilyn Rapier.

Junior and senior high school boys and girls gave a physical education demonstration at Memorial Hall. Junior high girls in this tumbling exercise are Jane Zimmerman, Kay Sailors, Janet Lager and Joleen Scott.--Tribune photo.

Mid-Continental Waterproofing Co., today, completed the tuck pointing of the west side of the Orval Williams building at Second and Main streets.

Dr. L.L. Cooper filed this morning with Nola Graham, county clerk, for the office of coroner of Bourbon County on the Republican ticket.

John Bower, Redfield, suffered a broken bone in his left big toe when a truck wheel ran over it at King's Garage on East Wall street. He was treated at Mercy Hospital.

With emphasis on learning new tricks of the trade in sharing an appreciation of quilting and an art expressive of our pioneer heritage, a couple of Fort Scott quilting buffs are calling a "meeting of minds' for May 10. That is when Nancy Swanwick and Barbara Wood, who call themselves co-ordinators, will conduct an organizational meeting of the Bourbon County Quilting Guild.

Fort Scott High School senior Bret Allen posted three victories to take the No. 2 singles championship and help the Tigers finish second behind Neodesha in the Cherryvale Invitational Tennis Tournament."--Photo by Dave Wagner
