Defending 3A champ breaks school long jump record

RICHMOND -- Jayhawk-Linn sophomore Taylor Dawson, who won the Class 3A State championship in long jump last season, broke the school record in a meet at Central Heights Friday.

Dawson, who won State with a mark of 17 feet, 5 1/4 inches last year, cleared 17' 9 3/4" Friday, also scoring team points that helped her team win the meet.

In all, the Jayhawks won five events, three of which were relays. The 4x100-meter relay team of Brogan Hoover, Morgan Eastwood, meriel Long and Dawson ran a 53.9. The 4x400 team with Hoover, Eastwood, Long and Dawson ran a 4:34. The 4x800 team of Sylvia Grant, Stephanie Mayhugh, Hoover and Long finished in 11:07. The other winner was Elisha Jones in javelin with an effort of 99' 4".

Eastwood was a second-place finisher in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 18.1 seconds, and the 300's in 51.1.

Thirds went to Dawson in the 400 meters in 1:08.3, Hoover in the 800 in 2:47 and Beckman in the 3,200 meters in 13:30.

Fourth-place medalists were Mayhugh in the 1,600 in 6:18 and Grant in the 3,200 in 13:51.

Amory Miller took fifth place in javelin with her mark of 87' 2". Long was sixth in the 800 in 2:58 and Kaylee Brownback placed sixth in the 300 hurdles in 58.4.

No boys' results were available.

Jayhawk-Linn's teams will compete in the Frontenac Invitational Thursday afternoon.
