Garnett break-in may be third in a series

Garnett Police haven't determined whether a home invasion that happened in Garnett late Sunday is connected to two home robberies in Fort Scott and Pittsburg last week.

"It's possible, but we just don't know at this point," said Garnett Capt. John Leinweber.

Shortly before 11 a.m., Sunday, three unknown males entered a residence in the southwest part of Garnett, which is about 57 miles northwest of Fort Scott. All three men were armed with handguns and wore hooded sweatshirts and ski masks, according to Garnett police.

The intruders tied up three victims, whose identities are being withheld, with a cord, Leinweber said. Then, the theives ransacked the home and stole a small amount of money, he said.

The three victims were not injured in the incident, which police are investigating.

The intruders took off in an undetermined make and model vehicle, he said.

Late Wednesday, Pittsburg Police responded to a home invasion of an elderly couple who were awakened from bed by three intruders wearing all black clothing, black masks and gloves. One of the intruders pointed a hand gun at them, demanding money.

About an hour later, Fort Scott Police responded to a home invasion of an elderly female who told officers three black men kicked in her door and wanted money. They got $8 cash from her purse.

Also, it's the second home invasion in the Garnett area within the past week. Late Thursday, three black men forcefully entered the residence of Ruth Hermreck in rural Anderson County, according to Anderson County Sheriff Scot Brownrigg. They robbed Hermreck at gun point, taking off with about $400. The sheriff's department has been in contact with authorties from Bourbon and Crawford counties, since similar crimes happened in those areas.

Pittsburg police said the two incidents appear to be connected.

Authorities describe the males as being about 5 foot 6 inches to 5 foot 9 inches tall with medium builds.

No arrests have been made in any of the incidents. Police urge anyone with information about the crimes to contact Pittsburg Police at (620) 231-1700, Fort Scott Police at (620)223-1700 or Garnett Police Department at (785) 448-6823 or the Anderson County Sheriff's Office at (785) 448-5678.

Police also urge residents in these areas to be more aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity.
