Hiattville pastor back in pulpit after return from Africa

Retta Smith was again the speaker at worship Jan. 20 at the Hiattville United Methodist Church in the absence of pastor Andy Smith. Her sermon was titled "Discouraged But Not Defeated." Scripture was read from John 1:29-42 and Isaiah 49:1-7. She encouraged the congregation to keep on pushing, "praying until something happen." Her husband was a welcome visitor.

Paula Brewer and Rachel Wagner were special guests of Paul and Earlene Pitts Jan. 23 for lunch in honor of their January birthdays. Clara Brewer and Kayla Wagner enjoyed eating with them, also.

Cait-Lyn Mitchell spent Friday night, Jan. 25, with her grandparents, Dean and Effie Mitchell.

Kole Wagner spent part of Saturday morning with his great-grandmother, Clara, while his mother was shopping in Fort Scott. Ronnie Brown has been spending some time in Topeka, visiting with our state senator and representative concerning funding for R.C.D. and the conservation districts.

Several from this area attended the annual Bourbon County Conservation District meeting and award ceremony Saturday night, Jan. 26, at Uniontown High School.

Thelma Buntain visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Miller on Monday afternoon. Sunday visitors at the Miller home were Mr. and Mrs. Ryan Miller and sons of Uniontown and Heather Meisenheimer and daughters of Nevada, Mo.

Pastor Andy Smith has returned home from his trip to South Africa and filled the pulpit at the Hiattville United Methodist Church Sunday, Jan. 27. The congregation is very thankful he had a safe journey. His sermon was titled, "Dependency." Scripture was read from Isaiah 9:1-4 and Matthew 4:12-23. Kole Eastwood was a welcome visitor. This was the monthly "cookie" Sunday. Several January birthdays and wedding anniversaries were recognized.

It was announced that the "Over 70" dinner would be held Feb. 10 at the church. Anyone who is over 70 years of age and wishes to honored this way can contact Ronnette Vincent or Ann Ludlum.

Mr. and Mrs. Don Gautier attended the baptism of their grandson, Gregory, Saturday evening in the Catholic Church, following mass.

Ideal Chapter met Thursday evening with Effie and Dean Mitchell presiding in the East as worthy matron and worthy patron. The worthy matron had a gracious welcome for the nine members who were in attendance on such a cold night.

Beverly Davis reported for the Auditing Committee.

The worthy patron reminded the members that the masons' annual chicken supper would be April 8. Members, remember we always need help to serve this meal for the masons.

These words of wisdom was shared by the worthy patron, "Investment in knowledge always pays the best interest."

Delicious refreshments of creamy potato soup and chili were served by Beverly Davis and Lynda Foster.

The next meeting will be Feb. 14.

Ben Mitchell and Pat Cook were Sunday afternoon callers at the Dean Mitchell home.
