'Hounds battle but Ravens prevail
Fort Scott Community College's men rallied early in the second half of Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play against Coffeyville Saturday afternoon but the Red Ravens were finally able to secure victory in the final seconds in a 69-65 nail-biter at Arnold Arena.
The Red Ravens (7-3 in the division, 16-6 overall) were missing starter Lenny Daniel with an injury and saw J.J. Seymore not quite at 100-percent coming off the bench after he didn't play in Wednesday night's 91-67 at Labette. Jonathan Blake, a 6' 6" sophomore from Houston, stepped up to lead the Ravens with 19 points while also grabbing seven rebounds and picking up three steals. He helped Coffeyville's cause in the first half by hitting a pair of three-point shots that helped his team get out to a 27-17 lead after 11 minutes of play.
Coffeyville's lead was as large as 13 points on two occasions late in the first half, the last when Michael Johnson put back a missed shot to make it 38-25 with 1:48 remaining. Fort Scott's Willie Bland scored six of the last eight points of the half to close the margin to 40-31 going into the locker room.
The absence of the 6' 7" Daniel -- the conference's second-best offensive rebounder with 3.35 per game -- was felt in the second half as Fort Scott staged its rally. The Greyhounds (1-9, 6-16) held the Ravens without a score during a 10-0 run that brought them within 44-43 with 13:34 remaining.
Blake broke the scoring drought with a pair of free throws but it was another minute before Coffeyville got another field goal, also by Blake.
Both teams went on runs, although they weren't sustained as both teams were having trouble shooting the ball. Fort Scott took the lead, 52-51, when Arsenio Williams stuck back his own miss with 9:37 to go. But Coffeyville scored the next seven points.
Bland's tip-in brought the 'Hounds back to 60-58 with 4:50 to go. But Terrance Hill's layup sparked an 8-2 run which made it an eight-point game with 1:40 left.
Fort Scott made it interesting as Kyle Grant scored five in a row, including the Greyhounds' only three-pointer of the game, to bring them within 68-65 with eight seconds left.
Coffeyville could have put it away at the free-throw line sooner but missed the front end of a pair of one-and-ones. Devron Washington made the second of two charity tosses with seven seconds left to make it a four-point game.
Hill finished with 17 points for Coffeyville while Payne added 14. Bland scored 19 points for Fort Scott, Brandon Kinnie 18 and Williams 15 to go along with 17 rebounds.
The Ravens shot 36 percent from the field, making 24 of 67 field-goal tries, including six of 30 from three-point range. The Greyhounds finished at 42 percent on 28 of 67 but made just one of eight attempts from three-point range, lowering their conference-worst three-point shooting percentage to a point where it now has to be rounded up (19.9) to read as 20 percent.
Coffeyville outrebounded Fort Scott 47-43 as Washington hauled down 12 boards and Hill grabbed 11.
