Tigers swept in league triangular

INDEPENDENCE -- Fort Scott High's wrestlers had chances late in both duals here Thursday night to get wins or ties but instead suffered a sweep at the hands of Labette County and Independence in a Southeast Kansas League triangular at Losey Gymnasium.

Fort Scott (2-3 SEK, 5-5 overall) and Labette County (2-1, 2-2) were tied 30-30 after Blake Cowen and Blake Nelson recorded back-to-back pins and Aaron Judy picked up a forfeit win. But LC's Shawn Moody scored a pin over Drew Bryant at 215 pounds to give the Grizzlies the lead. The Tigers were open at 285 pounds.

Against Independence (1-3, 3-3), the Tigers led 33-27 after Nelson scored a pin over Zane Evans at 171. But Independence scored pins at 189 and 215 to take the lead and, again, the Tigers had to surrender the six points at 285.

"We wrestled much improved tonight but still couldn't pull out a win," Fort Scott head coach David Brown said. "We were in reach both matches but failed to win the ones we really needed to win."

Nelson (24-8) was one of Fort Scott's four double winners on the night. He pinned Labette's Brad Bohlenblust in the opening dual.

Cowen (5-5) also scored two pins, sticking Labette County's Bryce Vaveeka and Indy's Johnny Ainsworth in his matches at 160.

Michael Durossette (13-10) won both his matches at 125. He pinned Labette County's D.J. Bush and Indy's Cody Adkins.

Denzell Davis (12-6) won both of his matches at 119 by forfeit.

Single match winners were Justin Sharp (16-11), who pinned Chase Cushing of Independence at 112, and Blake Cox (18-11), who took a 2-1 decision over Independence's A.J. Reed, and Judy (3-4), who picked up a forfeit at 189 in the LCHS dual.

The Tiger varsity is idle until it travels to Rose Hill for a two-day tournament Feb 1-2.

The Fort Scott junior varsity squad will host a round-robin tournament, a new addition to the schedule this year, at 9 a.m. Saturday at the FSHS gymnasium.
