The week that was in Jayhawk wrestling

It was an eventful week in Jayhawk-Linn wrestling last week as the Jayhawks took part in two triangulars and a tournament, all in a five-day period.

The week began with a triangular at Erie. Jayhawk-Linn won both duals, beating Erie, 42-18, and the Labette County junior varsity, 31-21.

Of the 15 matches actually held that night, the Jayhawks won 11. Mason Craig had two pins at 119 pounds, Tyson Baker won both his matches at 145, and Briar Snyder took both at 171.

On Thursday, Jayhawk-Linn split at Lenexa, beating Kansas City-Wyandotte, 39-24, while host St. James Academy took a 34-27 decision.

Wyandotte's victories in the Thursday dual all came at weights where the Jayhawks were open.

To wrap up the week, head coach Brett Kramer sent two of his wrestlers to the Randy Starcher Invitational at Tonganoxie Saturday.

Alan Johnson took second place at 215 pounds, finishing a week in which he won six of seven matches. He pinned Drew Ellison of Rock Port, Mo., and A.J. Demaranville of Tonganoxie on his way to the finals. There, Derek Newson of Atchison took a 10-6 decision.

Snyder wrestled at 160 pounds for the Jayhawks. He was 1-2 and did not medal. He lost his first match by pin to Aaron Bialek of Kansas City Bishop Ward. In consolation, he took a 9-1 win over Derek Feist of St. James Academy. He was eliminated when he was pinned by Skylar Cooper of Topeka West.

The Jayhawks are only going to take to the mats once this week, but they'll be in two places at once. The varsity squad will go to the Kansas City-Piper tournament Saturday morning. At the same time, a second unit will go to Adrian, Mo., for another tournament. Both are slated to begin at 9 a.m.
