Sophomore Arsenio Williams scored 34 points and grabbed 14 rebounds at Arnold Arena Saturday afternoon but his effort couldn't prevent Fort Scott Community College's 80-71 loss to Independence in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.

Williams' 34 was the most since Bateko Francisco scored the same number in Fort Scott's 109-96 win over Labette last season. During the past 10 years, only the 39-point night by Tyrell Dyer in January of 2005 against Johnson County was better.

Williams converted 12 of 16 shots from the field on his way to his seventh double-double of the season and his 21st in his two years as a Greyhound.

Fort Scott (0-3 in the East, 5-10 overall) lost its fifth straight game as a high number of turnovers cancelled out a good shooting performance.

Independence (3-0, 12-3) jumped out to an 18-8 lead before head coach John Burns called time out with 13:36 left in the first half. At that point, the Pirates were eight of 13 from the field and had committed just one turnover while Fort Scott was just three of six, unable to get more chances to score due to eight turnovers.

The 'Hounds broke huddle and straightened things out, cutting down the turnovers as they went on an 11-2 run, capped by consecutive Williams baskets.

Indy went on a run of its own after that and went up 30-24 with 3:24 left in the half after Daniel Rowe followed up a teammate's miss in transition.

Fort Scott scored the next eight, the last six by Williams -- the only Greyhound with more than one field goal in the first half -- punctuated by a tomahawk dunk that put his team ahead with 1:29 to go.

Antonio Hansen scored a three-point goal for Indy to put it ahead, 33-31. Williams stuck back a teammate's errant shot to tie the score again. But Chris Tyler grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back as the horn sounded to end the half.

The Greyhounds would tie it once more on Brandon Dougherty's transition layup with 17 1/2 minutes left in the game. But James Bush and Rowe converted consecutive three-point plays to put the Pirates ahead for good, 43-37.

Jamill Harris scored 10 points off the bench for the Greyhounds, who shot 49 percent from the field on 25 of 51 but also committed 25 turnovers.

Hanson led Indy with 19 points. Rowe followed with 14, then Bush and Michael Craion with 11 each and Donald Rowe with 10. The Pirates connected on 42 percent of their shots from the field on 31 of 74.

Independence won the battle of the boards, 43-40, as Craion hauled down 10 boards. Daniel Rowe also had six steals for the Pirates.

Neither team shot well from the three-point line. Indy was two of 17 there while Fort Scott was one of three to bring its season total to 19 of 88 (22 percent). Both teams, however, did well at the free-throw line with Fort Scott going 20 of 33 and Indy making 16 of 23.

The Greyhounds host Neosho County Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Arnold Arena. Saturday's game began a stretch where Fort Scott will play eight of the 10 games at home. Fort Scott also hosts Allen County Saturday afternoon before going on the road to Johnson County next Monday night.

Following the Johnson game, the Greyhounds will play two more at home, go on the road for one, then play three straight home games to wrap up this stretch.
