HIGHLAND -- Fort Scott Community College's women bounced back from a tough loss at Coffeyville Saturday to defeat a Highland team here Wednesday night that had been nationally ranked in NJCAA Division II.

Fort Scott evened its conference record at 1-1 and improved to 7-3 overall with a 61-52 victory in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.

Freshman guard Leondra Doomes-Stephens led the Greyhounds with 17 points while also picking up five steals. Frosh post Ashley Jappa converted six of eight shots from the field as she scored 13 points and also led with 12 rebounds. Sophomore Kenya Doss added 12 points and had eight rebounds.

Highland, which fell out of the D-II poll earlier in the day after going into the holiday break, ranked No. 16, fell to 0-2, 7-6. Freshman Amber Guthrie led the Scotties with 17 points while freshman Amy Galey added 16.

The Greyhounds shot 33 percent from the field in the game, making 22 of 66 field-goal attempts. They were five of 19 from three-point range. Highland, however, shot just 30 percent from the floor on 19 of 64 and went eight of 22 from behind the arc.

Highland outrebounded Fort Scott, 52-44. But the Scotties also committed more turnovers, 12-9.

Highland's statistic sheet does not break down the game by halves, so it is not known exactly how each half went.

The 'Hounds will play their first conference home game versus Independence Saturday at Arnold Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
