Senior dancers back in the swing of things

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

The Senior Swingers dance at Buck Run Community Center was a good one and a big one. There were many comments such as "We're sure glad to be back in the swing of things" or "It has been ages it seems since the dance here." At 5 p.m. when we started gathering in the kitchen and getting things ready for the dance at 6:30 p.m., the sun was still shining and all was going OK.

Coffee was made and kitchen was ready for the food that was being brought in for refreshments at break time. At 5:30 p.m., the gym was cleared of boys and basketballs, and tables and chairs were being set up. The band was ready at 6:30 p.m. and all went well. Even Wes was present and in tune. Many times he is a bit late, as he has quite a ways to come and he has other complications.

The monthly can was out for rent donations. The table was covered with cards to sign and dances to announce.

A sympathy card was signed for the August Rasmussen family who passed away this past week.

A get well card was signed for Lucille Smith who is in the hospital here at Mercy. Her complications are keeping her still in intensive care. Hope she will be back with us soon.

A get well card was signed for B. T. Eaton who entered the hospital today for heart problems.

A birthday card was signed for Lucille Smith who is having a birthday Saturday.

The dance "Put your little foot out" was requested and several took part and did well with the steps to the music. Also the Line Dance was requested and all seem to enjoy it. There were 14 dancers and all seemed to know what they were doing.

Word was received that Estil Cox is in a rest home in El Dorado Springs and not doing so well.

Lucille and Harold Shumaker celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary New Year's day. they were given a hearty welcome.

Jason Richardson came in late and was asked to join the band after break time. He has played and sang in the band before and was welcomed again.

Joe and Pat Willis from Nevada dance band were guests and he came to the stage after intermission. He took Marion Shrimplins' bass guitar and sang several numbers. With Alva McNeely on his violin, Wes on the mandolin, Clarence Nation on his horn and me the piano, we had quite a dance session after break time.

It seemed they didn't want to quit as we all took turns playing with them. It all went well and with the hint, the chairs and tables were being ready to put away, we closed with our theme song "Faded Love"and the dancers soon had the tables and chairs put away. It was a very pleasant evening for us all.

There will be a dance in Pittsburg Wednesday night at the community center. Dance at Cadmus Friday night and The Marmaton Valley Fiddlers Pickers and Singers will meet at th e Senior Center on North Main Street Sunday afternoon.
