Local man arrested in weekend slashing

The Bourbon County Attorney's Office filed charges Monday against a Fort Scott man accused of slashing an acquaintance with a knife over the weekend.

Albert L. Arvizu, 24, was charged with one felony count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. On Monday a judge at Arvizu's first appearance in Bourbon County District Court ordered a bond screening. In the meantime, he is in custody at Southeast Kansas Regional Correctional Center.

At 5:49 a.m. Saturday, Fort Scott police received a call from local resident Vanessa Hershey. She told police there was a stabbing at her residence at 802 Heylman St.

Officers arrived a short time later and determined that Jason Hershey, 35, Vanessa's husband, had been stabbed twice on his body with a folding knife, and Arvizu was alleged to have done the stabbing. Police said Jason Hershey refused medical attention at the scene. The wounds weren't considered life-threatening. Police said they don't know whether he later sought medical attention.

The incident stemmed from a discussion that allegedly developed into a confrontation between Hershey and Arvizu. Police declined to say what the argument may have been about.

Arvizu and another man, who was not arrested, arrived at Hershey's house prior to the incident.

Police say Jason Hershey and Arvizu may have been friends and that one or more of the two parties involved could have been consuming alcohol.
