The Arcadia Community Center was the site for the second monthly Community Gospel Sing held on Nov. 10 with around 60 in attendance. Carl Goodwin served as master of ceremonies for the evening event. Singers from the area included Donna Rickman, Girard; Willie Maples, Minden Mines, Mo.; Larry Ray DeOrnellis, Pittsburg; Janelle Bunney, Liberal, Mo.; Carl Goodwin, Franklin; Paul Starne and Bonnie Hines, Arcadia.
The instrumental music for the evening was provided by Jim Krieger, Paul Starne,Willie Maples and Carl Goodwin playing guitars. Keyboard was played in turn by Joyce Hines, Jean Greek and Donna Rickman. Additional musicians were David Drake and son, both of Arcadia, who played banjo and mandolin. The winner of the drawing for a basket donated by the Oskaloosa Freewill Baptist Church was Jean Greek.
Refreshments were served by the Old Settlers Committee for a donation to help fund next year's activities.
Dec. 22 will be the next Community Gospel sing in the Arcadia Community Center. In keeping with the holiday season, Christmas gospel songs will be incorporated into the program.
Ethel Long, a former resident of Arcadia, a sister to Betty Payne, Arcadia, and Florence Karnes, Fort Scott, received word of the death of Ethel's daughter, Janice Cooper, 45, and husband, Jake Cooper, 47, in an accident when their car was struck by another on Arkansas Highway 10, on Thursday, Oct. 25. Our sympathy goes to the family.
On Veterans Sunday, a successful cookout fundraiser was conducted in God's Coffeehouse. Hotdogs and hamburgers with potato salad and green beans were served with cake for dessert on the menu with a drink.
The raffle for the gas barbecue grill went to Pastor David Peterson. In turn he donated it to the coffeehouse for future use.
A birthday cake to honor the Marine Corps anniversary was presented by Patty Peterson to former member, Lou Dehn, who served during the war.
Special thanks goes to Kristin Peterson, Girard, and son Jack, Joplin, Mo., who helped with cleaning and setting up for the event.
Others who were involved in this day's activities were Lou and Betty Dehn, Wayne and Christy Parrish, Vera Parrish, Patty and Gary Peterson, Linda and Ceara Bridgewater, Paul and Diane Starne, and John Dice. The earned funds will be used to do more work on the recreation center. Thank you to all who supported the cause.
This reporter could hardly believe her eyes when she saw the picture of Max Lundquist on the Patrick's People page, Sunday, Nov. 11, Morning Sun. He was just a little lad when I was a Freshman at PSU back in 1937-'38. His dad, Howard Lundquist, was an Arcadia High School graduate as was I -- many years apart. My brother, Bill Corporon, also from Arcadia High School, taught with Howard in Pittsburg High School as an English instructor while Howard was the commerce teacher. Bill roomed with Daphine and Howard and the children. Thus the connection to my being the baby sitter.
Mrs. Lundquist grew up in the Bronaugh area, so many times while I was sitting with the kids, the parents went to visit friends and relatives and attended activities in Missouri.
These are good memories and I was glad to see Max is active in cooking chili for charity programs.
In The Fort Scott Tribune 50 Year Ago news dated l957, the article told that Arcadia Homecoming Queen Sandra Sue Stelle was crowned at the half time ceremonies at the Arcadia-Hepler game in Arcadia. Her attendants were Carole Anne Morris and Mary Lyn Brown.
Mr and Mrs. Richard Hencey of Arma met former Arcadia friends in Fort Scott on Tuesday including Jack and Mary Lee Payne and send greetings to his Arcadia High School classmates of l945.
Edith Bridgewater and her crew were pleased with the good crowd who attended the chicken noodle dinner in the Arcadia Community Center on Sunday, Nov. 18. The proceeds and donations are to fund the Children's Christmas Party to be held on Dec. 16. Thanks go to donors of various items such as desserts, offerings, workers and the good fellowship had by all.
A welcome goes to recent newcomers to Arcadia. They are Gary and Sharon Coombs and family in the former Hazel Stearns home; Ian and Kristen Monaghan and family next door to the Christian Church bungalow on Ohio Street and Robert Aicher in Emory Briggs' house on East Walnut Street.
