Community revolves around church

Kevin Endicott of Washington state was a welcome visitor at worship Oct. 7.
The congregation was also happy to welcome Sue and Jonathan Wheeler back after a long absence. Pastor Andy Smith's sermon was titled "Do We Experience Christ?" Scripture was read from Lamentations 1: 1-6 and 2 Timothy 1:1-14. Joe Ludlum had the children time and talked to them about planting seeds and what to expect to reap when they grow.
October was Pastor Appreciation Month. The Hiattville United Methodist Church has planned several activities to honor our pastor last month. The Harmony Sunday School class honored him Oct. 7 with a chicken noodle dinner following the morning services.
The Beacon Board hosted an appreciation dinner for all the volunteers at the First Baptist Church Oct. 8. Dale Johnson presided. Patty LaRoche was the guest speaker. Clara Brewer was happy to have her daughter Mildred Hall accompany her to the dinner.
The Hiattville United Methodist Women met Oct. 8 at the church with Patty Gauthier presiding. The meeting opened by all repeating the "Purpose." Roll call was answered with "favorite fall activities." Judy Tripp gave devotions titled "Bless Yourself" based on Proverbs 17. Mabel Miller gave the "Response" moment also the treasurer's report. It was decided not to have the annual Unicef party this year due to lack of participation of the children. A special offering will be taken during worship Oct. 28.
Mrs. Miller presented the lesson for the evening, titled "Our Time For Mission." Those present participated in the lesson and signed their pledge cards for 2008.
Many were listed for Prayer concerns. The meeting closed with prayer. Mrs. Miller served refreshments.
Beverly Davis and Clara Brewer attended an Eastern Star meeting in Chanute Oct. 9. Janice Olson, Grand Ruth presented 22-year pins to two of their members; Marlene Marts and Voral Manson.
Ideal Chapter 369 met Oct. 11 with Effie and Dean Mitchell presiding in the East. The degrees of the Order were exemplified. The associate matron stated she would provide refreshments for the Oct. 25 meeting and thanked Clara Brewer for bringing refreshments to this meeting. An invitation to Pursel Chapter at Columbus for Nov. 5 for presentation of 50-year pins was received.
Margaret McDermed reported she had not sent any cards since the last meeting. It was reported that the husband of the worthy grand matron had been having some health problems and the grand secretary had eye surgery. Oma Mitchell celebrated her 98th birthday last month.
The secretary was instructed to send a note of appreciation to Master of the Lodge Gerald Mitchell for the new door on the Lodge Hall.
Beverly Davis reported on the visit to Chanute for the presentation of pins.
The worthy matron thanked the members that had changed offices during the meeting, also thanked everyone for attending. Mae Ellen Gift gave a birthday offering.
Refreshments of sandwiches, cookies, cheese puffs and iced tea were served by Clara Brewer.
The monthly potluck was enjoyed Saturday night at the church.
Lavone Page enjoyed attending the "Bunco" party at the home of Patty McClenahan Saturday night. Beverly Davis and Clara Brewer attended an Eastern Star School of Instruction in Coffeyville Oct. 13.
Charles and Paula Brewer have returned from a trip to Fort Collins, Colo., where they visited with Paul, Leah and Solomon Brewer.
Visitors welcomed at worship Oct. 14 were Cleo Lou White from Washington, Barry and Matthew Wheeler, Lovella and Tanner Howard, Kevin, Rachel and Kole Wagner, Harold Headrick and Julie Fry's little niece, and Chaftin Leggett. Cindy Schwalm had the children's message. Pastor Smith's sermon was titled "Is In All Places." Scripture was read from Jeremiah 29: 1, 4-7, and Luke 17: 11-19.
A special welcome was given to the Hiattville 4-H members that were in attendance. Worship assistants for the month of October were liturgist Ronnette Vincent; greeters Jamie Collins and Katelyn Vincent; and ushers Bill and Jennifer Sampson.
The members of the Hiattville U.M.W. have been invited to participate in a Mission Study Nov. 6 at the Mound City Church. Pastor Dallas Peterson will teach the study.
Chaftin Leggett spent the weekend at the home of John and Lorna Slater. Sunday, Lavone Page took him and Lorna to Fort Scott where they enjoyed eating at the Knights of Columbus spaghetti dinner. Many from this area attended the farm sale of Leon and Sherral Fry on Sunday and ate lunch with the 4-H club. Kayla Wagner spent the weekend in Joplin with friends.
