Fall brings plenty of food, fellowship, fun activities

Bonnie Hines reported on the first monthly community Gospel Sing that was held at the Arcadia Community Center on the evening of Oct. 13.  The event was hosted by Mayor Paul Starne.  Local singers present were Janelle Bunney and Deryle Rotramel of Liberal, Mo.,  Donna (Stephens) Rickman of Girard, Carl Goodwin of Franklin, Paul Starne and Bonnie Hines of Arcadia. Musicians for the evening were Jim Krieger, Paul Starne and Carl Goodwin playing guitar and Joyce Hines on keyboard.

Refrreshments were available for a donation for the Old Settlers Festival 2008. A basket filled with books, compact discs, note cards, etc, including a $10 McDonald's gift certificate was donated by the Oskaloosa Freewill Baptist Church for the drawing won by reporter Mary V. Shead

The Mayor is currently working on the next musical event to be held on Nov. 10.  An audition will be held Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Center.  All are welcome to attend and enjoy or participate in this community sponsored event. 

Cary Younge of Red Rock, Okla., visited his Mother, Leora Younge in Arcadia last week and attended Arcadia Christian Church on the last   Sunday morning in October.

Early morning on Sunday, Oct. 28, Christy and Wayne Parrish, Lou and Betty Dehn went to the west railroad track road that leads into Arcadia to offer cookies and hot cocoa and an invitation to Christian church to travelers coming into town.

The lesson for the day was Esau and Jacob reconciled.

Announcement was made concerning the Halloween bonfire and wiener roast sponsored by the church will begin at dark in the little private park owned by Emory Briggs on East Walnut Street.

A Veteran's Day Dinner will be held Nov. 11 at God's Coffee House beginning at 1p.m. Hot ddogs, hamburgers, potato salad and baked beans are on the menu for a donation to help complete the work on the building.  The raffle for the gas grill will be held at 3 p.m. that day.  Tickets may be purchased from Linda Bridgewater, Patty Peterson, Betty Dehn or John Dice.

Pastor David Peterson received greetings to the church from former Pastor Leon Weece who is now pastoring in Miami, Okla.

Pumpkins, skeletons, skulls, and scary grave ssites have appeared in the John Wort front yard in preparation for the Halloween callers.

Sunday,  Oct. 21, Ernestine Berkey attended the poker run held in Lincoln Park in celebration of the 70th anniversary of 86AM KKOW radio station.  The proceeds went to the Operation Santa started by the late Dan Willis.

Our Gang of Arcadia High School fame met last week in Arcadia with a good crowd for the Chili Dump feed. The Nov. 17 meeting in Community Center will be turkey dinner  furnished for $2 fee and pot luck by each.

Saturday, Oct. 27, was a successful Kids Night starting with a hay rack ride before the wiener roast  was held outside followed by a dance with D.J. and lights held inside. 

Edith Bridgewater is announcing a chicken and noodle dinner to be held in the Community Center on Sunday Nov. 18, starting at noon. The proceeds are to fund the Children's Christmas Party  to be  on the evening of Dec. 16.  Both activities will be in Arcadia Community Center.

Both post office and city hall will be closed on Veterans Day, Nov. 12.

A reminder is to remember the Crawford County Cato Tour is to be begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.

During the annual Craw-Kan Telephone meeting in the Girard High School cafeteria  on Oct. 23, Roger Doue, Bob Gladson and Terry Kunstel were re-elected on the board for  three-year terms.

Autumn Leaves members are thankful to Richette Shireman, R.N., and Sam Schropp, CHA, from Community Outreach, Girard for the flu shots and blood pressure readings before the Oct. 3 dinner and business meeting.

Jerry Coonrod gave the blessing. Lilly Coonrod, president, opened the meeting with flag salute and Lord's Prayer.

The November meeting has been cancelle, but plans were made for the Dec. 10 Christmas dinner, meeting and gift exchange.  Each is to invite a friend.

In keeping with the season, Carole Garrison read "October's Bright Blue Weather." M.V. Shead read about "Orange Jews."  Much fun was enjoyed by all playing Bingo until the sacks prepared by Lilly were given as prizes as she called the numbers.  The eight present for dinner including above mentioned were Helen Sisney, Jack and Mary Lee Payne, Bob Cavin.  Gary Peterson stopped by for a cup of coffee as he left town on business.
