Hiattvillians gather for service, fellowship, worship

Kevin, Rachel and Kole Wagner, Charles and Paula Brewer and Clara Brewer attended the fall program at the Fort Scott Christian Heights school Oct. 19. Kole was a participant.

Arlene Hawkins is here from California visiting at the home of Dean and Effie Mitchell and other relatives.

Mr. and Mrs. John Slater and Mr. and Mrs. Dean Mitchell gave anniversary offerings at worship Oct. 21. Julie Fry had charge of the children's time. Since Oct. 21 was Laity Sunday, four members of the congregation gave short talks about their faith journey. The speakers were Lavone Page, Lorna Slater, Ronnie Brown and Joe Ludlum.

Visitors welcomed were Virginia Chambers, a friend of Kayla Hightower, and Jonathan Gauthier. Cassie Schwalm gave the special music, a vocal solo, "Raise Me Up."

Wilma Hawkins from California spent a few days here visiting in the home of Dean and Effie Mitchell. She came especially to attend the 50th wedding anniversary celebration for the Mitchells.

A large crowd attended the 50th anniversary celebration for the Mitchells hosted by their children, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Hines of Sheldon, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Rod McGinnis of Waverly, Kan., and Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Mitchell and their nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Delbert Crays and Leon Fry are both home recovering from their recent trips to the hospital; Delbert was in Kansas City and Leon in Wichita.

Several from the area attended the Homecoming parade in Pittsburg Saturday morning.

Ideal Chapter No. 369 Order of the Eastern Star met Oct. 25 with Worthy Matron Beverly Davis and Worthy Patron Charles Gift presiding in the East.

Minutes of the Oct. 11 meeting were approved as read. Margaret McDermed gave the treasurers report and the Sunshine report.

Agnes Armstrong and Margaret McDermed volunteered to provide refreshments for the Nov. 8 meeting. That is the only meeting the chapter will have in November due to Thanksgiving.

The secretary reported she had ordered a new copy of the secret work for the associate patron.

Correspondence was read from Amy Chapter, Galena, for Friendship Night, Oct. 23; past ddistrict aides meeting in Baxter Springs Oct. 27; Olive Chapter Fort Scott, Nov. 6; Rob Morris Chapter, Nov. 20 and to Electa Chapter Nov. 26.

Agnes Armstrong gave both birthday and anniversary offerings.

Beverly Davis and Clara Brewer reported on the trip to Coffeyville to attend the School of Instruction at that chapter which was held on Saturday Oct. 13. The School of Instruction for District No. 4 will be Saturday Dec. 1 at Galena. It will also be an afternoon school.

The chapter has not been notified yet what our assignment will be in the school. The worthy matron thanked the officers that changed stations for the meeting which included Lynda Foster, Agnes Armstrong and Dorothy Kitner and Charles Gift. Mrs. Davis served refreshments of Halloween cupcakes, cookies, cheese, crackers and cider at the close of the meeting.

David Schwalm had charge of the children's time at worship Oct. 28. Visitors welcomed were Wilma and Arlene Hawkins, Mike Page's friend Jennifer and her two small children. Mabel Miller on behalf of the United Methodist Women unit presented special recognition pins and certificates to Bill and Jennifer Sampson.

Pastor Andy Smith's sermon was titled, "Who Is Justified?" Scripture was read from Joel 2:23-32 and Luke 18:9-14. This was the last Sunday of Oct. appreciation month honoring Pastor Smith. A carry in dinner honored him immediately following Sunday School hour. The monthly administrative board meeting was held later with Ronnie Brown presiding. The church conference will be held November 18 at 10:30 with the Rev. Ron King, District Superintendent, presiding.

The nominating committee will meet with pastor Smith Nov. 11 following morning services.

Mr. and Mrs. John Slater and Mr. and Mrs. Mark Brillhart and Clay attended the wedding of Scott Sutton and his bride in Pittsburg Saturday evening.

Tom and Jonna Page have been here from Mountain Home, Idaho, visiting his mother Lavone Page, also Jonna's brother and family in Fort Scott. While here, Jonna celebrated her birthday.
