Farewell to Fort Scott
To the Editor,
Because of my father's occupation, I lived in Fort Scott from the age of eight until eighteen. However, it is not because of my father's occupation that I call Fort Scott my hometown. I visit frequently because my family is, friends are, and memories are all around. Fort Scott holds my childhood memories from French Fry the dog eating fireworks, Mr B.'s popcorn, poker with the Johnsons, swimming at the Keatings to being baby-sat by the Rollers and so many more. My family has been here through many city commissioners, police chiefs, 'Kevin Allen Kool-Aid' days, high school graduations, and many more events that will always be in our memories. I debated traveling to Fort Scott last night for the reception to honor my father. I went because I needed to know there are people that acknowledged my father made a positive contribution to the City of Fort Scott. So, thank you to all of you who came. At first, I wanted to say shame on those of you who didn't because I couldn't understand how one could honestly believe that in 14 years here he didn't do something positive in our community. Now, I say thank you for not coming. Thank you for allowing my family, and those close to us, to be able to say farewell to the community of Fort Scott without the negativity that flourishes in Fort Scott. I hope that Fort Scott perseveres in the future and becomes grateful for the positives.
