100 YEARS AGO

(1907)

The $41,500 church building reared by the Methodists of the First church is to be dedicated in the morning. The church is to be dedicated free of debt. Every dollar of the needed money has been subscribed. One year ago last June the old church was torn down.

Work on remodeling the room at the corner of Main and Wall streets, recently vacated by the Gas & Electric Co., and soon to be occupied by the new state bank, has commenced.

Mapleton continues to thrive and prosper and believes that within a few years she will be the largest city in the county. The growth is to be attributed to her new industries, according to the Mapleton Press.

Sidney Milton is being tried out for the position of end of the K.U. football team. He has played center the past two years.

75 YEARS AGO

(1932)

County road forces today initiated work on an improvement on the Rock Creek Road, which will give about 20 men employment. The road is not only to be resurfaced with crushed rock and asphalt but its width is to be increased from 10 to 16 feet, rendering it much pleasanter to drive on and also much safer.

A large crowd enjoyed a Founders Day program at the Y.M.C.A. last evening as a part of the 111th anniversary of the founder of the institution, Sir George Williams, and the men who helped start the local organization. A demonstration was given by classes trained by Melvin Williams, boys' work secretary, and a group of girls supervised by Miss Colegove, high school physical education director. The girls presented a tap dance. They wore costumes of red and white. Swimming demonstrations were given.

Fort Scott hot rod racers did well at Osawatomie over the weekend. Lloyd Tanner placed first in the stock derby, third in the fast heat and first in the stock feature. Dale McDaniel, driving Cook car No. 26, was fourth in the modified feature. Veriland Simmons finished second in the modified heat and fifth in the modified feature. Junior Sims developed car trouble. On Sunday afternoon Dale McDaniel was first in the fast feature and third in the fast heat. Lloyd Tanner was second in the fast feature and then spun out in the fast heat while running third.

Jean Gilmore, a physical education teacher at the Fort Scott Junior High School, has been selected as the district's 1983 nominee for Kansas Teacher of the Year. Gilmore, who first began district employment at Fort Scott High School in 1964, alongside her husband Jack, has a tough act to follow. Shirley Palmer, a second grade teacher at Winfield Scott Elementary, was honored by a March Kansas Senate resolution as the 1982 Teacher of the Year."
