Cyclones breeze by Tigers
Visiting Ottawa scored seven goals in the second half of play and put an early end to the Fort Scott High School varsity soccer match at Ellis Park Tuesday evening.
The Cy-clones took a 10-0 win, with Eric Messenger's tally ending the game in the 77th minute of play.
The Tigers, 3-11, looked slow compared to Ottawa and the Cyclones' ability to get past the last line of defense made the difference.
Ottawa's offensive aggressiveness was seen in the fact that it was called offsides 13 times. There have been games this season where both teams haven't been called offsides 10 times.
Ottawa, 5-7, led 3-0 at halftime as Ian Sutton tacked on goal No. 3 in the waining minute of the half. Then Cyclone David Wilson scored three goal in the first three minutes of the second half, making it 6-0 before the Tigers knew what had happened.
Fort Scott had just five shots on goal in the contest. It's best chance to score was in the 24th minute when Josh Buller's line-drive shot was saved by Scott Stoops.
Buller did score Fort Scott's goal in the junior varsity contest, which ended in a 1-1 tie. His goal came in the 48th minute of the 50-minute contest
Grant Wells was the Tiger goalie in the JV game. He faced six shots and made five saves.
Both the varsity and JV play their last home games of the regular season Thursday. Coffeyville will visit with the 4:30 varsity contest counting in Southeast Kansas League play.
