FSCC receives forfeit from Indy
As it turns out, Fort Scott Community College's football team is undefeated after all.
The Greyhounds lost on the field at Independence, 20-16, on Sept. 1. But earlier this week, the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference awarded that game to Fort Scott after it was discovered that Independence had used an ineligible player.
Fort Scott's record is now 3-0 in the conference and 4-0 overall, which puts the Greyhounds in a tie with Butler at the top of the conference standings.
Independence also had to forfeit a non-conference win the following week against Air Force Prep but was allowed to keep last week's 30-28 KJCCC victory over Highland because it did not use the player in question.
Independence is now tied with Hutchinson for fifth place in the KJCCC at 1-2, 1-4. Before the forfeits, there was a four-way tie for second with Fort Scott, Independence, Garden City and Coffeyville.
The big news for Fort Scott football today comes from the National Junior College Athletic Association, which released its poll this morning. Butler moved up to No. 2 behind Snow, Utah, which is the third team to assume the No. 1 spot in as many weeks after former defending national champion Blinn, Texas, saw a 15-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Kilgore, Texas, in a 40-39 verdict Saturday. Blinn fell all the way to No. 8.
Fort Scott enters the poll for the first time this season in a tie for No. 19 with Coffeyville, which is 3-2. The Greyhounds would have likely entered the poll regardless of the forfeit -- indeed, the record listed in the poll still has the loss to Indy -- as they have defeated Coffeyville on the road and then-No. 18 Navarro, Texas, this season.
The Greyhounds will go back on the road this Saturday when they travel to Hutchinson to take on the Blue Dragons in a Jayhawk Conference battle at the newly-renovated Gowans Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
