Tiger golfers shut out at Crestwood

PITTSBURG -- Fort Scott High School's golfers left Crestwood Country Club here Tuesday without either a team medal or an individual medal for the first time since opening the season at Girard with only three players.

The Tigers shot 485 as a team to finish seventh and no individual was able to score less than 109 at the Pittsburg Invitational.

Margaret Adams, the only golfer who represents McAuley Regional High School of Joplin, won her sixth title of the season by shooting a 38 on the front nine and a 37 on the back for a three-over-par 75.

Two Carl Junction, Mo., golfers, Adysen Mertens and Natalie Byrd, finished second and third, respectively, to help lead their Bulldogs to the team title with a four-woman score of 391. Columbus was right behind with a 394 and Caney Valley, led by the Roper cousins, was third with a 405.

Adrianne Tourtillott was Fort Scott's best golfer as she finished with a 109.

"Not our best tournament of the season, but the kids did a great job of competing," Fort Scott head coach Karen Curran said. "Adrianne was a little better yesterday. She really struggled on Monday (in Uniontown's tournament at Fort Scott), but came away from Crestwood feeling a like she was getting back on track."

Cassie Ogran followed with a 114, then Kacie Brown at 125. Kim Henry rounded out team scores with a 137.

"Cassie had an up-and-down day," Curran said. "Throw out a couple of high scores on a few holes and the rest of the round was consistent. Still looking for her to get under 54 for each nine and stay there.

"Shelby competed in her first 18-hole tournament and did her absolute best. She has good shots and bad shots, just like every other beginning golfer, but she keeps a good attitude and keeps working hard to get better. Jessica was kind of the same yesterday for her first 18-hole tournament. She's working really hard to be able to finish out the season as one of the top six to compete at regionals."

The Tigers travel to Columbus for a nine-hole tournament scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Thursday. They'll finish the regular season with an 18-hole affair at Anderson County a 1 p.m. Monday, then play in the Uniontown Class 4-1A Regional Tournament that will be held at Fort Scott Country Club Oct. 8.
