Eagles sweep larger schools

RIVERTON -- Uniontown's volleyball squad swept a quadrangular here Thursday night against a pair of Class 3A schools and a Class 4A opponent.

The Eagles improved to 8-5 on the season with the sweep. They defeated Columbus of the Southeast Kansas League, 25-19, 25-14, as Abbie Smith converted six of eight attack chances and recorded four kills. Riley Stephens and Char Bradbury also had four kills each.

The Eagles then swept Riverton of the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League, 25-12, 25-13. Smith was 11 of 12 in attack and picked up eight kills. Kyli Harvey was five of six in attack with four kills.

Finally, Uniontown swept the CNC's Galena by 25-11, 25-13. Smith had five kills as she went eight of 10 in attack. Harvey was eight of nine in attack with five kills and Stephens was seven of 10 in attack.

"We had a great evening of volleyball," UHS head coach Jackie Hall said. "We started a bit slow but came together and played together as a team. It was fuu to watch and coach."

Uniontown hosts Southern Coffey County and St. Paul in a Three Rivers League triangular Tuesday night. It's also Senior Parent Night.

JUNIOR VARSITY -- Although Uniontown's junior varsity volleyball team did not play Thursday, it has played several matches this past week, including a tournament and two sets of duals.

Saturday, the Eagles went to Moran to take part in Marmaton Valley's tournament. Results from that tournament were as follows:

* -- Uniontown def. Hartford, 15-9, 15-6. Leading server: Lizzy Underwood, four points.

* -- Uniontown def. Southern Coffey County, 15-7, 15-11. Leading server: Jessica Harrison, six points.

* -- Uniontown def. Humboldt, 15-3, 15-1. Leading server: Marliss Allen, 17 points.

* -- Uniontown def. Southeast-Cherokee, 11-15, 15-5, 15-6. Leading server: Harrison, seven points.

* -- Uniontown def. Northeast-Arma, 15-4, 14-16, 15-8. Leading server: Allen, 11 points.

Monday night, Uniontown played host to matches against Fort Scott's junior varsity and freshmen teams. The Eagles beat the FSHS freshmen, 25-11, 25-22. Erin Allen and Breanna Esslinger each served seven points. Uniontown also defeated the FSHS JV, 25-8, 25-19, as Cassie Schwalm served nine points.

Tuesday, the Eagles traveled to a quadrangular at Cherokee. Rayma Ridge served for 27 points as the Eagles beat Galena, 25-10, 25-5, and for 13 points in Uniontown's 25-11, 25-22 win over Southeast-Cherokee. In the final match of the night, the Eagles beat Riverton, 25-9, 25-18 as Ridge and Taylor Rathbun each serves nine points.

The Uniontown JV stands at 14-4 for the season. UHS will take a freshmen team to a tournament at Iola this Saturday. The full JV will also host Southern Coffey County and St. Paul on Sept. 18.
