Uniontown's Elder fifth at Eureka tourney

EUREKA -- Uniontown's Kiersten Elder earned her second medal of the season as she finished in fifth place at the Eureka Invitational here Monday.

Elder's score of 50 tied with Rachel Wilson of Fredonia. Wilson won the scorecard playoff.

"Kiersten started the round with a birdie on No. 3, a par-3 with a chip in from the green," Uniontown head coach Alan Shinn said. "Until the last three holes, she was able to bogey on five of the six. But she double-bogied the last three holes she played. She was hitting the ball much better than she was last Thursday."

Taylor Hanson scored a 67 for Uniontown while Emily Pulliam shot an 80 and Raven Hixon scored 98. This allowed the Eagles to score as a team for the first time this season, although their score of 295 was sixth among the teams eligible for the team title.

"Taylor hit the ball well of the tee box but a lack of concentration caused her to have some difficulty," Shinn said. "She was rushing her second, third and fourth shots. Emily and Raven are both showing improvement in their game. They're hitting the ball batter and continue to improve each time that they play."

Defending Class 4-1A State champion Andover won the tournament with a team score of 193. Fredonia was next at 232 with Anderson County third at 235.

Andover individuals took the top three spots. Courtney Spangler shot a 44, Taylor Herrin a 47 and Morgan Nyberg a 49.

The Eagles travel to Moran this afternoon to play the Marmaton Valley Invitational at Sunny Meadows Golf Course. Monday, they go to Nevada and Tuesday they will play the make-up of the Fort Scott Tournament.
