Erie defeats Uniontown in season opener

ERIE, Kan. -- Uniontown failed to take advantage of at least a couple of scoring opportunities here Friday night and had to settle for a 14-8 loss to Erie in a non-league, season-opening football contest.

The Eagles scored first on Shawn Pritchett's one-yard run in the first quarter with his two-point conversion catch from Travis Aikins making it 8-0.

Erie sophomore quarterback Preston Page brought the Red Devils within a score before halftime on a 27-yard run. But the conversion run was unsuccessful.

Page gave Erie the lead in the third when he hooked up with senior Jacob Daniels for a 14-yard major score and then threw to Matt LaRue for the two-point conversion.

Uniontown head coach Jim Mason said the Eagles had a couple of chances to tack on more points but couldn't.

"When we got up 8-0, we had another change inside the 20 but failed," he said. "In the third quarter, we had fourth-and-goal from the seven but threw a pick. So our chances were there."

Pritchett rushed for 54 yards on 12 carries for Uniontown while Zach Mason had 42 on 13 carries. Brandon Boyd caught two Aikins passes for 17 yards and Drew Johnson caught two for 30.

David Shank made 13 tackles for the Eagles while Pritchett recorded 12.

Both teams had similar offensive numbers. Uniontown had seven first downs, 121 yards rushing and 168 total yards. Erie had six first downs and 131 of its 160 yards on the ground.

Erie was able to win despite losing four fumbles.

The Eagles play host to Riverton next Friday in another non-league game.
