History students participate in Kansas State History Championships
Thanks to the Tribune for allowing me 'time off' while I was having knee surgery. Hopefully, all will be back to normal soon.
Dorothy Dallas and Janet Norman, Bedford England, have been here visiting their daughter and sister, Linda Culbertson of Girard. While here they were honored with a luncheon given by Betty Schubert at her home in Uniontown. Those attending were Linda Culbertson, Girard, Charles Schubert, Susie Franklin, Edna Marie Jackson, Bronson, Charlotte Culbertson, Topeka, and the honorees. The afternoon was spent playing bingo. Linda Neville demonstrated flower arrangements. All enjoyed the lovely afternoon.
Thursday dinner guests of Bonita Holeman were Chuck Shelton, Britt Shelton, Will and Hanna of Overland Park, Kan.
The Uniontown community is very proud of the History Students at West Bourbon High School. Over 50 members, students and parents and friends, attended the Kansas State History Championships at Washburn University in Topeka in April, where 11 Students qualified to participate in the national championships that were held in College Park, Md.
Those in the competition were Travis Stewart, Kaity Smith, Kate Spainhoward, Melissa Query and Gage McKinnis who gave a performance on "When Light Turns to Darkness" which was a group performance on Matylda Getter and her hiding of children during the Holocaust.
Triumph Over Tragedy in Przemys which was an individual performance telling of a 17-year-old girl who rescued Jews in the Holocaust by Rebekah DeMoss.
"This Little Light of Mine" was a group exhibit on civil rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer, and was given by Courtney Boyd, Jessica Schaaf, Koltan Schaaf and Kylie Shepard.
"From Prairie to Dust to Conservation" the story of the soil on the Great Plains, was a junior exhibit on the dust bowl given by Emily Simpson.
History Day encourages students to express their knowledge of and interest in History through creative and original dramatic performances, media presentations, historical papers, or three-dimensional exhibit projects. The research and study for district, state, and national competition, goes through the entire year. The National competition involves the top 2,000 students from across the nation from over 700,000
Who compete in order to advance from local to state to the national competition.
Those who competed and won excellent ratings, but not qualifying for Nationals were: Hillary Jurgensen, Taylor Rathbun, Abbie Smith, and Jamie Shank who gave a documentary film on the beginning of rock and Roll, "Rockin' with Johnny Bragg".
"Triumph and Tragedy, for the greatest Athlete of all time," by Kiersten Elder, Jamie Shelton, Weston Warren, and Luke Spainhoward.
"Wilma Randolph, Polio Survivor to Olympic Medalist," by Kaitlyn Vincent, Jessie Camac, and Julia Ayers.
"A Crack in the edge of the world" the story on the San Francisco Earth Quake by Tanner Howard.
Doctors, Tim and Paula Ulrich, who are both in Veternerary Medicine at their home in South Carolina have announced that they will be returning to the Mission Field in South Africa, and plan to bee there by Jan. 2008 to begin their teaching assignment there at North West University. Paula promises that we will be informed of their travels as their itinerary develops. It has been five years since their last appointment as missionaries ended there. Our community wishes them well in this venture. Paula is the daughter of Raymond and Carol George, Redfield.
