Woman injured in Saturday car wreck

A car driven by a motorist suspected of drunken driving struck a county bridge on Saturday that severed a Fort Scott woman's feet, according to the Bourbon County Sheriff's Office.

Around 4 a.m. Saturday, Michael Clark, 45, of Fort Scott, was driving north on the 800 block of 245th Street when the 1988 Mercury Grand Marquee veered off the edge of the road. Meanwhile, the passenger, Ella Greenfield, 47, had both feet dangling out the passenger side window. The car's passenger side door slammed into the concrete bridge, severing Greenfield's feet, according to the sheriff's office. Officials did not determine how fast the car was traveling when it impacted the bridge.

Greenfield was transported to Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott and later taken by air to St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo. She had surgery and was in stable condition as of press time.

Clark was not injured. Deputy sheriffs arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and no liability insurance coverage required. He was released about three hours later on $1,000 bond.
