100 YEARS AGO

(1907)

Attorney John H. Crider arrived home from Lawrence this morning. He attended the annual meeting of the A.O.U.W. order. Mr. Crider was re-elected for the sixth time as grand master of the order. His salary was raised to $4,000 a year. This is one of the best paying lodge positions in the United States.

The probate court today appointed Mrs. Anna B. Russell administratrix of the estate of her late husband, James Russell, the grocer. The deceased left a couple of houses and lots and the grocery store. It is understood that there are $18,000 or $20,000 in grocery bills due to the Russell estate. It is hoped that the aged wife of the deceased will be successful in collecting the bills due her.

75 YEARS AGO

(1932)

Fort Scott has lost one of its most substantial and popular business men in the death of Frank M. Penniman, president of the A.C. Penniman Hardware Company, who passed away March 1 at Mercy Hospital. Mr. Penniman was prominent in all affairs looking to the upbuilding of Fort Scott. He was a director of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Fort Scott Welfare Association, and was beloved by his brothers of the Fort Scott Rotary Club. He was a trustee of the First Methodist church and a member of the United Commercial Travelers. As a youth Frank entered his father's hardware store, the firm of A.C. Penniman & Son, one of the oldest establishments of Fort Scott, located at 109 Market Street. The funeral will be held from the Methodist church. Pallbearers will be J.T. Beatty, Dr. C.F. Young, G.R. Hughes, R.M. Thomas, Dr. Claude Brant. R.C. Campbell, T.L. Thogmartin and Alex Dickey.

The list of contestants for the Shrine sponsored talent show Saturday at Memorial Hall is still growing. Those added since the list was first published are Ruth Ann Huckaby, singer; Linda Dikeman and Joyce Wray, accordion duo; Leon Felt and Helen Kay Foster, ballroom dance; Rose Mary Albright, Edythe Wise, Nelda Rudisill, Shirley Hogatt, Geraldine Forrester and Patsy Blair, accordion sextet; Sharon Ruth Sisk, ballet; Newly added contestants are Gloria Hunsaker, tambourine dance, and Marilon Garton, vocal-piano number.

The Goodlander Hotel will be closed April 1, a member of the Hudson law firm said today. The attorney said he did not know what the operator, T.B. Baker of San Antonio, plans to do with the hotel. Douglas Hudson is the attorney for the Goodlander Hotel estate. Office tenants in the hotel building today received notice of the termination of their leases. The hotel was built in 1884 by Charles W. Goodlander, one of Fort Scott's noted early residents. Baker announced recently that the hotel was for sale.

A trip to Britain was shared with Sundowners Extension Homemakers Unit members through an account given by Christine Kivett, who spent three weeks on tour there last summer.

Jenny Reed Hinde is among 24 students selected to represent Kansas State University in a media promotion tour throughout Kansas.

Athenaeum Study Club met with Mrs. Lloyd Vann. Of the 20 charter members, two survive. They are Mrs. Marguerite Morton and Esther Campbell.
